﴾ Those who responded to Allah and the messenger after the wound had struck them: for those among them who did good and guarded themselves is a tremendous reward. ﴿
The relative refers back to the believers just mentioned and, rather than stopping at a name, joins them to the verb "responded." The term for answer, from j-w-b, denotes an outlet opened through what is massed together and running through it, a reply that goes out from the one called and reaches the one who called, and the istifʿāl form carries the actors' own entry into a deliberate answer. The first lām ties the response to Allah, and the wāw brings the messenger under that same lām. One lām gathers the two sides into a single response, so the answer falls to Allah and the messenger together, in one construction that leaves it undivided.
"After" establishes an explicit order: the response took place after the wound had struck them. The relative "what" carries the clause of striking, with "the wound" as its subject. The wound, from q-r-ḥ, is a knot that runs through and then enters an inward containment, so it carries an injuring effect that reached them. The definite article presents it as an effect already known between the one who speaks and those addressed, one single wound they recognize from its having fallen upon them. The force of the phrase lies in this: the earlier striking did not prevent the later act that is named response.
The prepositional phrase "for those" is brought forward, ahead of the delayed predicate "reward." The first of the relative's link-verbs is "did good." Doing good, from ḥ-s-n, is a containment that enters a fine channel and then issues from it to the outside, so it carries a sound act that carries through. "Among them" is partitive: it draws those who bear the two qualities out from within the responding group, so the reward is not handed out automatically to everyone the first relative covered, without the condition of doing good and of guarding.
The wāw joins "guarded themselves" to "did good," making the two verbs conjoined conditions within the relative clause. Guarding, from w-q-y, is a knot that closes in the depth and then extends as a cover over the one who holds it, and the iftiʿāl form brings the actor into a deliberate keeping. The predicate "reward" then comes indefinite, and the qualifier "tremendous" increases its density, so the greatness of the recompense appears as the outcome of doing good and of guarding.
The verse describes those who responded to Allah and the messenger after the wound had reached them, so it makes the response an act that follows the injury. The promise of reward then arrives bounded twice over: "among them" holds the partition, while the two link-verbs "did good" and "guarded themselves" define the group from within the responders. The past tense presents the response, the doing of good and the guarding as things that happened, whereas the description of a tremendous reward opens a settled outcome for those two conditions. So the movement runs from a striking to a response, and from there to doing good, guarding, and reward.
