﴾ Rejoicing in what Allah gave them from His bounty, and receiving glad tidings concerning those who have not yet joined them from behind them: no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve. ﴿
The text begins with an active participle in the accusative, a circumstantial qualifier of the living ones named before it: rejoicing. Joy, from f-r-ḥ, is a slit that opens and runs and then passes outward, so it carries a breadth that shows. "Rejoicing" presents the living as standing in that breadth; the preposition then ties them to "what Allah gave them," and "from His bounty" traces the origin of the giving back to the divine bounty.
The conjunction joins a present verb predicated of the group: they receive glad tidings. Glad tidings, from b-sh-r, are a connection that enters a spreading and then carries its effect onward, penetrating; the tenth form conveys both the receiving of the tidings and the seeking of their appearance. The preposition joins that receiving to the relative "those," so the joy of the living extends toward others whom their clause defines: their place behind the first group, and the awaiting of their joining it.
The particle of negation denies that the joining has occurred up to the time of the speech. Joining, from l-ḥ-q, is an attaching that enters an inward containment and then knots in the depth, so it carries the arrival of the later one at the earlier. The preposition binds those whose joining is delayed to the first group, while "from behind them" sets their quarter behind it. The clause thus presents them within a course whose arrival is not yet complete, and makes the glad tidings of those ahead concern them.
The glad tidings are expounded as this: that no fear will be upon them. Fear, from kh-w-f, is an emptiness that spreads in its bearer and breaks up his cohesion, so it carries an expectation that settles in the interior. The negating particle expresses the denial of a whole genus with an indefinite noun, so it denies the genus of fear of them within the content of the tidings. The pronoun refers to those who have not joined, and the negation is not turned into the description of a scene or of a cause that is not mentioned. The words "upon them" picture fear as falling on them from above, and the negation lifts it off them.
The conjunction joins a second negation, and the pronoun precedes the present verb: "nor will they grieve." Grief is an inward containment that presses together in a narrow place and is then held back in the hollow, so it carries an inward pain. The fronting of "they" fixes the reference of the negation, and the present carries the possibility of renewal that the sentence denies. Fear and grief are not one word: the first is denied as a noun from falling upon them, and the second as an act from issuing from them.
The verse describes the living as rejoicing in what Allah gave them from His bounty, making the joy an active and continuing nature and its cause a giving that is not named. Their state then widens into glad tidings concerning those who have not joined them from behind them, with no name, no number and no cause of delay. The content of the tidings is two precise denials: no fear will be upon them, and they will not grieve. The first keeps the genus of fear away from them, and the second keeps the act of grieving denied of them, with no scene and no appointed time added.
