﴾ Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for possessors of understanding. ﴿
The emphatic particle opens a sentence it keeps firmly in hand, and its predicate, the prepositional phrase "in the creation," is placed ahead of the subject still to come. Creation, from kh-l-q, is a piercing that takes hold of its place and then knots in the depth, so what it names is a bringing forth that is measured and holds together. It is annexed to the heavens in the plural, and the earth is then added to them in the singular, so that both named things enter together under the one preposition. By this construction the creation that gathers heavens and earth itself becomes the field of attention: a measured bringing forth whose directions widen while its knot holds. The reading halts at the relation the verse has actually stated, and takes height and earth as gathered under a single creation.
The conjunction adds "the alternation" to "the creation," making it a second term governed by the same preposition. Alternation, from kh-l-f, is a piercing that attaches and then opens a running course that sets two sides apart, so it carries both difference and succession, each side coming in place of the other. The alternation is annexed to the night, and the day is then added to it, so that what is named is the relation between the two names themselves: night and day differ, and each follows the other. Succession thus joins creation as a second field for the sign, and the order of the two names, together with the relation that holds them, remains the door through which the verse is read.
The shifted emphatic particle then governs the postponed subject of the opening word and doubles the emphasis: signs. The noun comes indefinite, plural and in the accusative, so that their multiplicity and their breadth are fixed together. A sign is a mark that refers, from its own appearance, to whatever it indicates, and the plural opens, within creation and within alternation, ways of reading that keep multiplying. Heaven and earth stand under one creation, night and day in an alternation without a break, and from these two relations come signs whose reception is renewed each time.
The last preposition attaches to "signs" and gives them a direction of reception: for possessors of understanding. "Possessors" is a collective noun meaning those who own, and it is annexed to the cores in the plural. The core, from l-b-b, is an attaching that connects and grips, and the doubled final consonant brings that connecting and gripping back again, so what the word bears is the pure part of a thing, the part that coheres within it. These are, then, people who possess an inner center that gathers scattered signs and keeps hold of what joins them. The indication lies spread through creation and alternation; the core is the receiving side that gathers their multiplicity into one coherent understanding.
The verse secures its sentence with two emphases: the particle at the opening, and the shifted particle with "signs" at its heart. Between them it sets two domains of indication, the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day. It then ties the multiplicity of the signs to the side that receives them: possessors of understanding. So the composition moves from a creation that gathers height and earth, and from a succession that gathers night and day, to a core firm enough to read them both. The relations the verse has stated are in themselves enough to open the attention that the following verse will describe.
