﴾ Mary, be steadily devoted to your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), prostrate, and bow with those who bow. ﴿
After the report of the choosing comes a command, so that the standing does not remain a description at rest. Devotion, from q-n-t, is a matter knotted within and closed over; it is an inward knotted for Allah. The lām in "to your Rabb" ties that knot to the Source of care, not to Mary's image in the eyes of people.
Prostration, from s-j-d, is a flowing that gathers into a bounded place and then comes to rest there, held. The body goes down from its extension into a firmly fixed position, and obedience appears as a posture, not as a claim. The conjunction ties prostration to devotion, so that an inward steadiness becomes a movement that can be seen.
The address to Mary stays singular in "bow," and then "with those who bow" opens it out onto a company. Bowing, from r-k-ʿ, is a flowing that is cut across and so makes what lies in the depth appear; the breaking of the upright line of the body carries the sense of yielding. The form "those who bow" is an active participle, which makes the bowing a working nature that continues in the company whose companionship Mary enters.
In the verse before, Mary was receiving what Allah had done with her; here she receives what is asked of her. The choosing, the purifying and the place among the worlds open before her a road made of three acts, instead of remaining descriptions that surround her from outside. Devotion keeps the direction through the stretch of time, prostration gives it a body in a descent, and bowing joins it to the movement of a company. In this way the place is tried by what it turns into in the present condition, not by the image it grants alone.
The verse carries two bonds that keep the standing from closing upon the self: "to your Rabb" returns devotion to the Source of care, and "with those who bow" returns bowing to the company of those who worship. Between the lām and the companionship the single person stands without becoming independent and without dissolving away: she has her own address and her own command, yet her direction is toward the Rabb and her movement is with a company. The choosing makes clearer what she is asked to carry within the obedience that is shared, and does not lift her above it.
The text brings the choosing out of standing into act: a devotion bound to the Rabb, a prostration that fixes obedience in the body, and a bowing that sets the one addressed, singular as she is, inside a company already at the work. The standing brings Mary into the companionship of those who bow, rather than setting her apart.
