﴾ And when the angels said: Mary, Allah has chosen and purified you, and has chosen you above the women of all worlds. ﴿
In verse thirty-six her mother named her Mary, and here the call carries that same name back to the one who bears it: "Mary." What had been an announcement made by the mother has become a name that reaches her inside the address of the angels. The call opens her hearing before it mentions the choosing at all.
"Has chosen you" is repeated, once before "has purified you" and once after it. Choosing, from ṣ-f-w, is a penetrating separation that draws out what is clear and joins it to its purpose. Purifying, from ṭ-h-r, is a broad covering that opens a channel for the breath and then sets the trace running, and the tafʿīl form gives it a sustained and repeated charge. Here purification stands at the heart of two choosings, not as a clause set to one side.
The second choosing moves on to "above," and so gives the choice a relative place among the women of the worlds. The worlds, from ʿ-l-m, are fields whose depths come to appearance and extend until they gather into a sign. The verse names no cause outside its own three acts; it sets Mary in the place that the address itself has named.
The verses before this one told of Mary's acceptance, her growing, her guardianship and her provision; here she becomes the one addressed. What took place around her no longer stays a report the reader alone knows; the call reaches her by her own name, and the acts are ascribed to Allah in her hearing. Care thereby passes from a course that carries her into the responsibility of receiving what is said to her, and the name her mother gave her becomes the door of an address that sets her in a new place.
The first choosing reaches Mary directly, then passes through the purifying, then comes back as a choosing set within a relation to the women of the worlds. Standing does not leap over the purifying and does not come apart from it; whatever is raised into a place carries at its heart the sustained work of cleansing. All the acts, moreover, keep coming from Allah and falling upon the one addressed, so that choosing is never turned into a claim she makes for herself, nor into a property that can do without its source.
"Above" therefore does not work alone in the verse; "has chosen and purified you" comes before it. The relative place is the close of a movement that began in choosing and passed through purifying, and not a shortening of that movement into preference. The mention of the worlds, for its part, keeps the standing inside a field wider than the self: what was given to her appears as a sign in a world, and it carries the weight of the place that has been named for her.
Mary's name comes back to her as a call, and then the sentence is built upon a choosing that holds a sustained purifying within it and returns as a choosing with a place. The repetition carries choosing across from an act that falls upon her into a standing among the women of the worlds, rather than saying the word over again empty.
