﴾ That is from the reports of the unseen which We reveal to you. You were not present with them when they cast their pens to determine which of them would take charge of Mary, nor were you present with them when they disputed. ﴿
"That" points back to what preceded of Mary's account, and then classifies it: from the reports of the unseen. Report, from n-b-ʾ, is an emergence that reaches the one who receives it and then closes upon a confirmed meaning, while the unseen, from gh-y-b, is an inner depth that holds what enters it while it still exists, covered from presence. Revelation, from w-ḥ-y, is a joining that carries a contained life and draws it out to the addressee. In this way the report comes out of what was never witnessed and into hearing.
"You were not present with them" is repeated twice, before the casting of the pens and before the dispute. The text leaves the source of the report in no obscurity, and claims for the addressee no presence he did not have: he was not with them in either scene. By this doubled negation the revelation guards its own limit, establishing the transmission and denying direct observation.
The text explains no method behind what it says: they cast their pens, and the question is which of them takes charge of Mary. Pen, from q-l-m, is a firm cutting that extends and whose trace then gathers, an instrument that separates out a mark and fixes it; here the pens enter a scene that calls for the naming of the one who will hold the charge.
Dispute, from kh-ṣ-m, is a penetration that strikes against a solidity, after which its sides gather at contention. The reciprocal form shows the sides sharing in the act, so the contention does not run in one direction only. Still, the verse keeps the axis of the dispute on the charge it has named and does not go out to their names or their motives.
The text does not say that the unseen has become presence for the addressee. It establishes that the absence remains, and then establishes that a report has arrived out of it. For this reason "We reveal it to you" and "you were not present with them" stand together without contradiction: the first names the channel that carried the report, and the second keeps the report from claiming any other source. Between the casting of the pens and the dispute, what is known stays at the measure the verse disclosed, and the truthfulness of arrival grants no permission to fill in what the text has left in silence.
The text names what preceded a report from the unseen, sets out the road by which it arrived, which is revelation, and then draws the limit of presence twice over: the addressee was not with the people at the hour of the pens, nor at the hour of the dispute. So the gap is not filled with a story from outside the verse. What stands is the casting of the pens, the question of who will take charge, and the pressing of the sides against one another.
