﴾ Remaining therein, the punishment is not lightened from them, nor are they given respite. ﴿
The verse opens on an active participle in the accusative, which ties it to those named in the verse before. Remaining, from kh-l-d, is a piercing that passes through and then clings and cleaves to its place, and the dāl then presses that clinging and fixes it. So the movement settles into abiding and does not cross over and detach itself. "Remaining" is an active participle, which makes abiding a continuing active nature in them. The force of the form is that of a state holding its bearers inside the description that follows, so they enter that description by this state and not by the reckoning of a counted time; abiding here is described by the state standing in its bearers, not by a duration that can be measured.
"Therein" hangs upon the abiding and so gives it its compass. The nearest explicit feminine noun in the preceding composition is "curse," which was set upon them as recompense. For that reason the pronoun is referred back to what the two verses before it have already voiced, and the abiding becomes an abiding in that very thing: a curse fallen upon them in the preceding verse, with them resident in it. The particle "in" carries the curse over from something that falls "upon them" to a scene they are "in," and the encompassing that began as a falling becomes the standing place of the abiding. The two particles answer one another without any added picturing.
"Not" then introduces a clause that details the state of that abiding. Lightness, from kh-f-f, is a piercing that opens a hollow, then passes through and runs on until it draws off part of a weight, and the repetition of the fāʾ doubles the passing through and the parting. Form II in "is lightened" carries a charge of diminishing that keeps to its object and is repeated, and "not" denies it. Punishment, from ʿ-dh-b, is an emergence out of the depth that pierces sharply and then joins itself to its bearer. "From them" makes the denied lightening a drawing away that would have lifted something of that effect, and this does not occur.
The conjunction adds a second denial and sets "they" before the verb built for the unnamed agent. Looking, from n-ẓ-r, is what is sent out from within its owner, overspreads the thing and runs on over it at length. In the passive build it is the one waited upon, or granted delay, who stands forward, rather than the agent of the delay. The denial cuts off that extension and so answers the active participle that opened the verse: an abiding that continues, no lightening that lessens the punishment, and no granting of delay that opens an interval. The short rhythm closes the outlets of lessening and of postponement.
The verse joins the preceding recompense to a continuing state: remaining. "Therein" refers the pronoun back to the feminine curse already named, so that what had been falling upon them becomes a compass in which they abide. Two denying clauses then tighten that state: the punishment is not lessened from them by any repeated lightening, and no extension of delay is opened for them. So the structure moves from the fixity of the abiding, to its place, to the denial of any lessening of the weight, and then to the denial of any postponement.
