Commentary
The verb keeps returning in this stretch until it becomes a thread on which things are strung. Jaʿalnā, from j-ʿ-l, is the drawing of a thing into its space and the fastening of it there in a shape it has to keep. So what comes after "We made" is not a quality mentioned in passing but a function deposited into a holder that grips it.
Sleep already stands in the ones addressed before anything is said about it. The verse does not bring it into being; it names what was set inside it. A description is said and lifted away; a setting is laid down and stays.
It does not say "sleep" at large. It says "your sleep." The pronoun belongs to those told, one verse earlier, ﴿وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا﴾, "and We created you in pairs." One addressee in both places, so the making comes down on them and not merely around them.
And sleep, from n-w-m, is an inner resonance that runs on joined and then closes into a cavity that holds it. The sleeper is not cut off from himself; he is folded onto himself. He is away from the outside while still joined to his inside.
The last word falls at the close of the verse, so it is heard twice, once as sense and once as rhyme. S-b-t is a continuous running that reaches its completion, is cut there, and lets go. Arabic says sabata al-shaʿr of hair shorn after it has grown long.
What is set into sleep is therefore a cut and not a stillness, and what is cut is whatever was running: the moving, the seeking, the looking. A cut that releases what it cut is not an ending but a limit reached and then left. The sleeper does not stop himself. He is stopped, and then let go.
Three words build a complete act. "We made" puts the function into its holder in a way that binds, so what is in sleep is no accident of it. "Your sleep" hands the act back to its owners, the same ones addressed in "and We created you in pairs." And "a halting" names what was put there: the cutting of what runs at its completion, and then its release. In your sleep you are cut off from your errand, not from yourself, and the one who cuts is the one who said "We made." A limit laid on the running every day, so that the running can come back.
Sleep is not called rest here, and not called absence. It is called a cut placed into what runs, by a hand that is not the sleeper's.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «And We made your sleep [a means for] rest».
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a listing of favours, and subāt as rest: a stopping of movement that renews strength and equips a person for the day's living. A missing word is supplied in the phrasing, "We made it a means of rest for you." Rendered: "And We made your sleep [a means for] rest."
A reading that names the effect of the halting as rest, and supplies a purpose the wording does not carry.
A root-reading
Jaʿalnā (j-ʿ-l): a drawing into a space and a fastening there, so what follows is set, not merely described. "Your sleep" is a possessive that binds the act to its owners, the same ones told just before, "and We created you in pairs." And subāt (s-b-t) is a continuous running that reaches its completion, is cut there, and lets go. The verse becomes: a cut set into your sleep, halting at its limit and then releasing what it halted.
A reading that halts at subāt and finds in it a bounded cut rather than a supplied rest.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the effect; the second counts the setting and the cut that the wording actually holds. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
» On traduit : « And We made your sleep [a means for] rest. »
Tadabbur
The verse puts into the human being something he cannot refuse. A cut is placed into his sleep, and the one who cuts is not him. The striking thing is that this cut is counted in a list of makings alongside what is plainly useful: a ground, a bedding, pairs, and then a cut placed into the striving. What withholds is here a piece of the making, not a punishment.
And the cut falls on what runs, and on nothing else. It is not said that the sleeper is quenched, nor that he is lifted away. What is stopped is what was running; whatever else there is stands where it stood. Hence the possessive: "your sleep." What is cut has an owner who takes it back.
Read the verse with the one after it and the order shows: a cut, then a cover to be worn, "and We made the night a garment." What runs is not stopped and then left uncovered. It is stopped, and then covered.
Perhaps there is here something like what is observed of living things everywhere: that the pause is not an empty space between two labours but a labour with an order and stages of its own. Those who study bodies describe this pause as a regular succession of phases that are not alike, and report that withholding it damages what a short hunger does not. Perhaps that is one instance of the pause being set in place rather than merely happening. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse said only "a halting," and settled nothing about the phases of sleep or its benefits.
