﴾ And We created you as pairs, each needing its match. ﴿
In the two verses before it the verb was from j-ʿ-l, and here it becomes "We created"; the object had been what stood around them, and here it becomes they themselves. Two changes occur in a single word, and each brings the address a step nearer.
A setting falls on something already standing and puts it into a station, whereas creating brings the shape itself into being. The root kh-l-q denotes a piercing that extends into a shape and is then cut at a decided limit, whence khalaqa al-adīm, said of a hide measured before it is cut. Creating is accordingly a measure taken beforehand, followed by a cut made to that measure.
The place where the stronger verb comes down is significant. Creating is ascribed neither to the earth nor to the mountains; it comes down on those addressed themselves, "We created you." The nearer the thing asked about comes to the one being asked, the heavier the act ascribed to the maker.
The second-person ending enters at this point. The following verse carries it on, ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا﴾, "And We set your sleep down as a halting of what runs," and the list after it continues to speak to them. A list that began under the foot has reached the owner of the foot, and having reached him it does not let him go.
The root z-w-j is two things, one joined to the other in a close, compact joining, so that they become a pair. A zawj is therefore one that is known by its fellow, not two, and it bears that name only because there is a counterpart by which it is completed.
A single sandal by itself is of no use, and it is nonetheless a sandal. Nothing is lacking in it in itself; what it lacks is what lies outside it. The name laid down here works in the same way, naming the need rather than the quantity.
Azwājan describes a condition in which they were created, not a thing handed to them after their creation. The verse says that they were created pairs, not that they have pairs, and coupling is the limit to which the human being was cut, not an addition to him.
Whoever was measured incomplete by design has been told two things at once: that his incompleteness is no fault in the workmanship, and that he does not complete himself. The term zawj is never used of one thing on its own; it is used of whatever carries its lack within its own name.
What came before was itself a pair, a soft bedding and a thing driven in that keeps it from shifting, neither standing without the other. The one addressed had heard a structure built of twos before anything was said to him about himself.
His turn then comes, and the same word is laid on him. What is said of him is that he is one of its pairs, rather than that he lives in a doubled world, and the case has moved from under his foot to his own shape.
Whoever grants that a bedding lies beneath him has granted little. Whoever grants that his own form was cut to a measure he does not own has granted the whole of what the list was asking for.
In a single word the act changes, and so does the one it falls on: the setting gives way to "We created," and what stood around them gives way to the ending that means you. A setting puts a standing thing into a station, while creating, from kh-l-q, is a piercing that extends into a shape and is then cut at a decided limit, so that the nearer the thing asked about comes, the heavier the act ascribed to the maker. The address enters here, and the list after it continues to speak to them. Azwājan then comes from z-w-j, two things, one joined closely to the other until they become a pair, so that a zawj is one known by its fellow, and the name names the need rather than the number. It is a condition in which they were created and not a gift that reached them afterwards, and coupling is accordingly the limit of the shape, not an addition to it. What had come before in the list was itself a pair, a bedding and a thing driven in, and when the listener's turn came the same word was laid on him. He first granted what lies under his foot, and he was then asked to grant what his own form was cut to.
