﴾ It is no more than one shout that drives back. ﴿
The fā arrives pressed against their words. No pause and no preamble stand between the ruling they issued and the thing that undoes it. They drew it out and then shut it, and the answer comes in the first letter after their shutting.
And they had built their speech on inna and the lām, two pieces that weight and enlarge. The answer comes with innamā, a piece that restricts and reduces: the same family, the opposite direction. They pushed back by making it huge, and are answered by making it small.
And hiya, "it", is a feminine pronoun. Everything named before it in this Surah is feminine: the shaking one, the following one, the dug hollow, the turning. The verse singles none of them out, so the reference stays where it was put, a thing known in the speech already and needing no name in order to be measured.
Z-j-r is a packed thing pressed together in a narrow place, massing and then loosed in one drive that turns back whatever it falls upon. From it comes the shout at a beast: a cry that turns the animal without a hand touching it. So zajr is a restraining by sound, and its effect is a movement in someone other than the one who shouts.
And they had denied that they would be mardūdūn, "given back". The answer comes with a word whose very work is the giving back. It does not argue with the case; it sets before them a single act that does the thing they said does not happen. The smallest cause imaginable carries out the largest thing they ruled out.
W-ḥ-d is an enclosing that knots and then narrows until it holds nothing but what it enclosed, and settles so that it will not widen for a second. The description here cuts off every repetition. It is not a shout followed by another shout, nor a call repeated until it is heard.
And they are the people of repetition: "they keep saying" is a renewed act, and the question is put again across two verses. So the answer comes as the thing that has no second. Whoever draws it out is answered with one time, and in one time there is no room for a second hearing.
The fā presses against their ruling and leaves no gap between it and its undoing; then the restricting innamā meets the weighting they built with inna and the lām, so the enlargement is answered by a reduction. And hiya is a feminine pronoun left where the verse left it. Then "a shout", and z-j-r is a packed thing in a narrow place loosed in one drive that turns back what it falls upon, so the answer to the denial of "given back" is an act whose work is the giving back itself, and it comes in the one-time pattern. Then "one", and w-ḥ-d is a sealed singleness that admits no addition, so no second is to be waited for.
They reckoned the return a losing transaction. It arrives on the scales as one sound.
Or ils avaient nié qu'ils seraient mardūdūn, « rendus ».
