﴾ Stop there. It is a bringing-to-mind (tadhkira). ﴿
Kallā comes down and cuts. What stands before it is an attention given to one and a turning aside from another: "and from him you let yourself be drawn away." Kallā does not argue with that and does not linger over it. It lays a hand on the movement and halts it, and then the verse begins again from the top.
No reported saying stands before it to be refuted. What is held back is the leaning itself: a face that turned, and the occupation that followed it. And its place, after ten verses that describe that leaning, makes it an edge in the middle of the Surah. Holding back quarrels with no one; it empties the channel for what is about to run through it.
Then the verse says "it is" and does not say what it is. A feminine pronoun arrives with no noun before it in the wording. Inna tightens the emphasis, so the emphasis falls on a description and not on an identification.
What follows the pronoun reports its work, not its identity: a bringing-to-mind. The sentence says what the thing does and stays silent about what it is. Whoever wants to name it finds that the verse has already gone ahead of him to the description. The reading halts where the verse halted.
The root dh-k-r is a sharp piercing held at its place and then set running: a cutting through that grips a meaning and does not let it pass by. So bringing-to-mind is not a repeating on the tongue; it is the fetching back of what had drifted out of attention into the place where it does its work.
Tadhkira is on the pattern tafʿila: a name for an act that falls upon someone other than the one who holds it. It is not a recollection standing in itself but an instrument that reminds another. And it comes indefinite, so it has no number and no bound.
What follows confirms this: "so whoever has willed has brought it to mind." The word names a function, and a function waits for someone to take it up. A lamp set in place gives light only to the one who opens his eye.
Three words cut and then set something down. Kallā holds back the leaning the preceding verses described and empties the channel, without arguing and without lingering. Then a feminine pronoun, under emphasis, arrives with no noun in the wording to explain it, so the emphasis falls on a description rather than an identification. Then tadhkira: the root is a sharp grip on a meaning that keeps running, the pattern makes it an instrument that reminds another rather than a recollection standing alone, and the indefinite lifts number and bound from it. The verse stops a movement and sets a function in its place, and leaves the name to whoever wishes to ask after it. What reminds is identified not by its name but by what it does to whoever passes it.
﴾ Halte là. C'est une remise en mémoire (tadhkira). ﴿
Trois mots tranchent puis posent quelque chose.
