﴾ and a clustering fruit (ʿinab), and a lopped growth (qaḍb), ﴿
What closes on itself alone has already come; now comes what does not stand except by its neighbour. ʿInab, from ʿ-n-b, is a deep gathering that issues out clinging: a coming forth from one place whose parts hold to one another and do not scatter. It is the same berry if you take a single one, and yet the name does not fall on the single one. The name falls on the shape: a many pulled tight onto one stem. So there are two ways to last: to close upon your own strength, or to hold to what resembles you on a common stalk.
The root q-ḍ-b is a cutting that passes into a soft gathered thing, parts it and brings it away. From it come qaḍīb for a lopped branch and miqḍab for the tool that lops. In its root the word describes no colour, no leaf and no height: it describes what is done to it. This is the first name in the count taken from a human act performed upon the thing. The grain was named by its drawing-in, the cluster by its clinging, and this one is named by a hand reaching toward it with an edge. And it is set in the list without the verse saying what it is, so its letters are read and the reading halts where the verse halted.
Beside the cluster the sense grows clearer. That one holds to its stalk and so remains; this one is parted from its stalk and so is put to use. Two logics inside one list, and they meet nowhere except in the hand of whoever counted them both.
Two things joined to the first growth, differing in how they are named. ʿInaban, from ʿ-n-b: a deep gathering that issues out clinging, so the name falls on the shape of the assembly rather than on the single berry, and it holds itself by holding its neighbour on one stem. Qaḍban, from q-ḍ-b: a cutting that passes into a soft gathered thing, parts it and brings it away, whence qaḍīb for the lopped branch and miqḍab for its tool, so the name falls on the blade rather than on the form. And the verse did not say what it is, so it is read from its letters and the reading stops at the verse's silence. The two things counted here are one that lives by holding to its origin and one that is known only by being severed from it.
One of them is named for how it holds on. The other is named for the blade. The list keeps both without ranking them.
