﴾ and when the stars are clouded over and stream down, ﴿
The root n-j-m is an emergence out of a depth that settles as a gathered point. From it Arabic says najama al-nabāt of a plant that comes up out of the soil, and najama al-amr of a matter that shows after being hidden. So in its very name a star is what came out of a depth and then held itself in, and did not spread.
The plural al-nujūm is on the pattern fuʿūl: a multitude in which each one keeps its own place, distinct and unmixed. That is what makes them fit to steer by: a point that stays a point, a clearness that does not dissolve into what is around it. The first thing about a star is that it does not run.
K-d-r is a clearness veiled by what mixes into it, so that it thickens and then runs down. As clear water into which dust is thrown: a heavy colour rises over it, and then it sinks with its own weight. The verb takes from the star exactly what made it a star, its distinctness and its holding of itself.
And it comes on the pattern infaʿala, the form of yielding rather than of resisting. This is why it stands alone among the conditional verbs of this Surah in not being built for an unnamed agent: everything around it is done to, while this one is described as having gone along. No resistance is mentioned and then denied. The form says the yielding without needing to name a hand that pushes.
Al-nujūm, from n-j-m, is an emergence out of a depth settling as a gathered point that does not spread, and the plural on fuʿūl makes each one distinct in its own place. Inkadarat, from k-d-r, is a clearness veiled by what mixes into it until it thickens and pours down in succession. What is stripped from them is their first quality: that they are points that do not run. And the form infaʿala states a yielding, not a repulse, and it alone in this long count is not built for the unnamed agent. After a sun wound up, stars from which the very thing that made them countable has gone.
What defines a star is that it holds together and does not run. The verse names precisely that quality and takes it away, in a form that describes going along rather than being pushed.
