Commentary
Ilā, "to," comes to turn the gaze one way after another: a gaze that had been lifted toward what is high is set down here toward what lies beneath the foot. The earth, al-arḍ, from ʾ-r-ḍ, is a base of affirmed presence on which the life that runs over it lies heavy, a footing on which whoever stands settles, not a passing patch. So the direction carries the one reflecting from the far and lifted to the near and spread out, the ground he never parts from.
The earth comes here last of the things looked at, after what was raised and what was set up, so the scene is complete from above to below. As the gaze was turned before to what was made, to what was raised and to what was set up, it is turned now to what was spread out as a footing. The call is one: to look into the how, alongside the what.
Kayfa, "how," asks in what shape it was, not whether it was or was not. The question here neither denies the earth nor seeks to prove it; it calls for reflection on the manner of its spreading, on the way it was leveled until it became a footing that is walked on. So the kāf holds hidden and the fāʾ splits open, with the yāʾ between them stretching the seeking from what is hidden to its opening, and the question gathers into a shape that reaches through to the form of the thing, not to the root of its being.
This turning of the gaze by kayfa opens the door of looking and does not shut it on a single answer: the one reflecting is invited to turn the shape over, and so to see the spreading by which the footing was made ready for dwelling, for walking and for tilling. The question itself is an invitation to listen, not a test whose answer is demanded in so many words.
The root s-ṭ-ḥ turns on an extension that spreads out heavily and is leveled into an even face, stretched out to be laid upon. The saṭḥ is the leveled top of a building, which is walked on; to saṭaḥa a thing is to spread it and stretch it over the face of the ground; the misṭaḥ is what dates and the like are spread on to be made ready. So spreading, in the root, is the leveling of an extended face made ready for what is set on it, and not a bare, empty spreading.
The verb suṭiḥat, "it was spread out flat," is built for a doer left unnamed, which makes the earth a thing acted on and leveled rather than a doer that spreads itself: a face made ready and stretched out for a purpose, after a hand that leveled it. So the earth looked at through kayfa becomes, by this verb, a witness to a preparing that came before, a footing spread out beneath the foot and leveled to carry the life that runs over it.
The verse turns the gaze, last of the things looked at, to what lies beneath the foot: "And to the earth, how it was spread out flat." Ilā brings the gaze down from the lifted to the near, and the earth, from ʾ-r-ḍ, is an affirmed base on which the life that runs over it lies heavy. Kayfa is a question of shape, not of being: it asks in what way the earth was leveled, not whether it was. The root s-ṭ-ḥ denotes an extension that spreads out heavily and is leveled into a stretched face made ready for what is set on it, and building suṭiḥat for a doer left unnamed makes the earth a thing leveled by a hand that came before. So the verse closes the chain of looking, from above to below, on a footing spread out and made ready, and calls for reflection on the shape by which the earth became a place to dwell.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
"And to the earth, how it was spread out" is read as the last in a chain of looking at the signs of creation: do they not look to the camels, how they were made; and to the sky, how it was raised; and to the mountains, how they were set up; and to the earth, how it was spread out. The sense is a call to the deniers to reflect on Allah's making, manifest before them, that they may yield to the raising and the reckoning. And suṭiḥat is taken in the common reading as its being laid out flat for settling and footing.
A reading that makes the verse a link in an argument addressed to the deniers of the raising, calling created things to witness to power.
A root-reading
Ilā turns the gaze from the lifted to the near, beneath the foot. Al-arḍ (root a-r-ḍ): a base of affirmed presence on which the running of life lies heavy. Kayfa is a question of form, not of being: in what fashion it was leveled. Suṭiḥat (root s-ṭ-ḥ): an extension that spreads out heavily and is leveled into an extended face made ready for what is placed upon it, and its passive form makes it leveled by a prior hand. The verse becomes: "And look to the earth, in what form it was spread out heavy and leveled into a footing made ready for what runs across it."
A reading that hears, in both roots, the shape of a heavy footing and a leveled, readied face, and in kayfa a call to reflect on the form rather than to prove existence.
The two readings do not conflict. The first sets the verse in the context of the argument for power; the second hears, in both roots, the leveling of a readied face and the heaviness of a footing. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"How it was spread out": the question of form as the close of looking
The verse comes as the close of a turning of the gaze from above to below: a gaze that began with what was created, then what was raised, then what was set up, then what was spread out. The recurrence of kayfa ("how") in this sequence shifts the question from "did He make" to "in what form did He make": what is asked is not the proof of the earth's existence but the turning over of the form of its spreading, until the one looking yields to the one who leveled it. The spreading looked at is a witness to a preparing, and the preparing is a witness to a preparer.
And the passive form of suṭiḥat ("was spread out") tightens this sense: the earth is a thing acted upon, not a doer, a face leveled by a prior hand for a purpose beyond it. The verse does not describe a geometric, declarative shape; it calls for the reading of the spread footing as a trace pointing to a deliberate leveling that readies the place for the life that runs across it.
Perhaps what kayfa suṭiḥat ("how it was spread out") gestures toward connects with what may be reflected upon in the study of the earth's surface: interlocking balances that make the face fit for dwelling. A solid crust floats over a yielding interior so that its dry land is leveled at a height near the level of water; an envelope tempers the heat so that it neither blazes nor freezes; a tilt and a turning distribute the light across the face. One might say that this "spreading out" fit for footing is not a single bare flattening, but a form in which conditions gather, by which the dry land spreads leveled and bears walking and tilling and dwelling. The extracted rule: kayfa in these verses turns the gaze from the presence of a thing to the form of its preparing, and from the form the intent is inferred. The word precedes the detail: the question about form is itself the call to yield.
