﴾ So remind; you are only one who brings to mind. ﴿
The fā in fa-dhakkir, "so remind," knots this command to what came before it. Before it passed a looking spread out over things to be pointed at, a creation set upright, raised high, and laid out flat, with the listener called to consider it. When the showing was complete, the command came joined onto it: "so remind," that is, bring what has been looked upon down into hearts as a reminder. The command is the fruit of what was shown before it, not the opening of a new speech. What was seen is to be said, and what is said is to be reminded with.
The imperative here is turned toward a single one addressed: remind, you. The text fixes nothing beyond the one addressed himself, and it lays upon his shoulders a single bounded act, the reminding. Reminding belongs to dh-k-r, the bringing back into presence of what had been present and then went absent. What the inward had first stored away and then forgotten is returned to it, and nothing new is fetched from outside.
Innamā, "only," affirms one thing and denies all beside it in a single breath. Its import is: this is your bound, do not overstep it, and this is your bound, do not fall short of it. It sets the one addressed exactly in his place, neither belittling him nor loading him beyond his strength. Upon him is the reminding, and what lies beyond the reminding is not upon him; what comes after the bringing back into hearts falls outside his door.
This narrowing is a relief in the shape of a charge. Whoever knows that the reminding alone is asked of him does not carry the worry of what he does not own. The verse divides between an act he is commanded with and an outcome that is not his to reach: the reminding happens from him, while the taking of guidance, or the turning away, happens in the heart reminded, not in the hand of the one who reminds.
Mudhakkir is an active noun from dhakkara, and it makes the reminding a standing description rather than a passing deed. Besides being commanded with an act that comes to an end, the one addressed was described by what he is, a bearer of a remembrance who brings it back into presence. A description runs upon the one it is said of and clings to him, so he is one who reminds wherever he is, and it does not part from him as long as he stands by the first command.
In "you are only one who brings to mind" the one addressed is returned to his true size: he is the one who brings the remembrance into presence, not the one who creates guidance in the heart. The noun, drawn from the very root of the verb, draws the two ends together: dhakkir is the act, mudhakkir the one who performs it. Command and description meet in a single origin, a bringing back after absence.
The fā joins this command onto what was shown before it, a creation set out to be considered: when the looking was complete, "so remind" came. Reminding, from dh-k-r, is the bringing back of what was stored within and then went absent, not the fetching of anything new from outside. Innamā then narrows the role to its bound: upon him is the reminding alone, and what lies beyond it is not his. "You are only one who brings to mind" turns the act into a standing description that clings to the one it is said of, and returns him to his size, a bearer of a remembrance who brings it back, not an owner of the heart it comes down into. So the verse is a command tied to what precedes it, followed by a fixing of its reach that relieves the one addressed of carrying what he does not own.
