﴾ God's dye. And who is better than God at dyeing? To Him we are servants. ﴿
"God's dye" stands in the accusative, and the parsing carries the rhetoric. One reading takes it as an absolute object, that God has dyed us with His dye; another takes it as an urging, hold to God's dye. Both readings meet in one sense: the verse is not describing, it is pressing. And what it presses for is not a surface rite of colouring but a colour that must enter the weave of the self. Tying the dye to the name of God is already a denial of every rival dye: whoever has taken God's dye is not helped by a second one, and whoever has taken another's is in a surface tint that goes at the first wash.
The root ṣ-b-gh has the nucleus ṣ-b, a force that shows itself, the same nucleus as in ṣabba, to pour, and ṣabara, to hold fast: something that comes down with a steady reach. Then the ghayn is an inside that wraps around. So dyeing at its origin is an extended coming down into the enveloping inside: a colour that goes into the fibres, not a coat that sits on the surface. From this comes the word in "it grows with oil and a dye for those who eat": the olive is a dye because it goes through the food and becomes part of it, and is not a thing sitting on top of it. By that measure God's dye is not a rite performed once and then finished; it is an inner fabric that changes until the colour comes out of the fabric itself.
The dye is not the fiṭra. The fiṭra is the first make stamped into the human before any intervention, the native oneness that comes before all upbringing. The dye is an act that comes over the top of that first make: a change intended by choice and by work, in which the fabric of the self takes a colour. That is why this place does not say "the fiṭra of God", though the Qur'an uses that expression elsewhere. The dye answers the colouring the parties lay on in 2:135, "be returners, or be helpers", and that colouring is itself an intervention laid after the first make, so it is answered by another intervention at the same level, the dye of God. The distinction is a joint and not a nicety: in the pondering of the Qur'an one word may not be put in the place of another.
"And who is better than God at dyeing?" The question is put to confirm what the listener already knows and to force him to say it: no one is better than God at dyeing. And the wording sets the comparison in the dye and not in the dyer: the question is not who is nobler than whom, but which dye goes deeper into the weave. The root ḥ-s-n has the nucleus ḥ-s, a fine clarity, and the nūn is a pushing through to the inside. So the better dye is the one whose clearness carries furthest, entering by its quality into the finest of the fibres. Every dyer other than God lays a colour above the surface, and a dye of that kind can be washed: there is no cleansing in it because it does not enter, and no lasting in it because it does not go through.
"To Him we are servants." The root ʿ-b-d has the nucleus ʿ-b, a coming out of the depth, and the dāl is a holding that stretches on. Service at its origin is what lies in the depth coming out, then setting fast and continuing. And the verse seals with a noun sentence and not a verb sentence: the state stays alongside, it is not an event that runs. "To Him" is put first to reserve it: the servanthood is turned toward the owner of the dye alone. Without this renewal by act the dye would stay a declaration on paper that comes undone at the first trial. Service is the dyeing done again: every act kept pure for Him dips the fabric back into the colour, until the colour itself becomes its nature.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the dye in this verse is not the name of a rite performed, but the description of a colour that enters the fabric of the self by renewed service, so that the one who has submitted is a submitter because he is dyed and not because he is named.
The verse gives a colour to everything before it: if the earlier verses described the stance, the way and the handing over, the verse of the dye describes the change that sets all of that into the weave. The root ṣ-b-gh, in its nucleus, is a strong coming down into the enveloping inside: not a coat sitting on the surface but a soaking that becomes the fibres. "God's dye" stands in the accusative, either as an urging or as an absolute object, that is, hold to this dyeing. The confirming question shows that the best of dyes, by the root ḥ-s-n, is the one whose clearness reaches the finest fibre, and God's dye is of that kind and has no equal. It is worth marking that the dye is not the fiṭra, which is a native first make preceding every intervention; the dye is a chosen change laid over it. Then the noun sentence "to Him we are servants" closes with the root ʿ-b-d: a coming out of the depth that sets and stretches on, and it is the repeated dyeing that dips the fabric back into the colour until the colour itself becomes its nature.
