Commentary
The call is made at its widest. "Entrust yourselves to what God has sent down" is built on a generality that leaves no room for narrowing: the mā is an unrestricted relative, and "what God has sent down" gathers everything that has ever come down from Him, before them and after them. Īmān in this place is not conviction in a school of thought; it is the giving of safety to the source wherever the source sends down. The answer the call is asking for is a generality of the same width.
Their reply exchanges the whole condition. "What God has sent down" becomes "what was sent down to us". The narrowing did not fall on the truth; it fell on the channel: the group, the writing that came to it, the road it already knows. Safety was pledged to the courier instead of to the sender. And once it is pledged there, everything beyond their own courier is barred, even when it comes from God Himself.
W-r-y has for its nucleus w-r, a joining that runs and extends, and the y is a soft stretching that carries on. So al-warāʾ is what surrounds the seen and reaches out behind it. The act of covering falls precisely on that reach: on everything that completes the first writing and lays it out in detail. They perceive that there is more behind their book, and they cover the more, so that the book may stay the property of their own group.
The verse then removes any excuse a doubtful content might have supplied. It says of the new text that "it is the truth, confirming what they already hold". The truth here by fixity, not by occurrence; and "confirming" is a state that goes along with it and does not leave it. Confirming, in ṣ-d-q, is the establishing of a link, not the cancelling of the first. So a refusal of the second is a refusal of the first along with it, because the first bears witness to the second in the very act of being confirmed by it, and whoever denies the testimony has denied the witness.
The last move is not a question at all but a binding. "Why then did you kill God's prophets before this, if you were people who entrust themselves?" A nabī, from n-b-ʾ, is a driving through from the unseen that juts into view, and the prophets who were killed came from inside the children of Isrāʾīl, out of the very "to us" the reply had appealed to. If barring the new had been about a difference of channel, the killing would never have landed on their own channel. The stated cause collapses, and what stands in its place is plain: the refusal was a refusal of the source and not of the road, and the book they sheltered behind is the first thing to testify against them.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity. "We entrust ourselves to what was sent down to us" is not a degree within entrusting oneself to God; it is the shutting of the role of receiving inside one group. And the question about the killed prophets shows that the shutting was never a guarding of the book. It was a guarding of the position that speaks in the book's name.
"Entrust yourselves to what God has sent down" is a generality that leaves no room for narrowing: an unrestricted mā gathering everything sent down before them and after them. The reply exchanges the whole condition: "what was sent down to us". The narrowing fell on the channel, the group and the writing that reached it, and not on the source; safety was pledged to the courier instead of the sender, and whatever lay beyond their own courier was barred, even coming from God Himself. W-r-y names that beyond: al-warāʾ is what surrounds the seen and reaches behind it, and the act of k-f-r is laid over exactly that reach. The binding set up by "confirming what they already hold" is severe: whoever acknowledges the confirmed is bound to the confirmer, and whoever refuses the confirmer has testified against the very thing he was confirming. Then the question shuts the door: "why then did you kill God's prophets before this, if you were people who entrust themselves?" Those prophets came out of that same "to us", so if setting the channel had been a guarding of the book, the killing would never have fallen on their own channel. The word precedes the term: tying safety to a channel is a role that begins with owning the book and ends with killing the ones who carry it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as: they reject what God has sent down even though it confirms what they already hold, so they are the covering disbelievers.
A root-reading
Every religious community has a sectarian temptation to lock truth inside whatever reached it. The verse exposes this structure: trust becomes possessiveness the moment it is tied to belonging before it is tied to the real. Acceptance has to be grounded in the source, not in the postman who carried the letter. A reading that turns the charge from one people's betrayal into the structure of any group that confuses channel with content.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

🔬 Reflection
"We entrust ourselves to what was sent down to us": Restricting trust to the group
The verse conveys a subtle stance: when called to entrust themselves to "what God has sent down," they reply that they entrust themselves only to "what was sent down to us." The shift between the two objects is revealing. "What God has sent down" (mā anzala llāh) attributes the descent to the Sender, making the subject everything He has sent. "What was sent down to us" (mā unzila ʿalaynā) attributes the descent to the recipient, restricting the subject to the group's share. The difference between the two stances is structural: the first opens trust toward its source, while the second closes it upon the identity of its receiver.
The expression reveals a known logic in religious communities: trust in the Sender turns into possessiveness over what was sent. The Quran reveals this reversal with two words: anzala (He sent down) and unzila ʿalaynā (it was sent down to us). The first verb is active and explicit, naming God. The second is passive, shifting the gaze from the Sender to the party upon whom it was sent. The group chooses the second formula because it affirms their identity as a specific site for descent, rather than a party receiving what is sent down in a general act.
The result of this restriction: ﴿وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَاءَهُ﴾. Everything outside the group's share enters the circle of rejection (kufr), even if it is from the same source. The Quran reveals this structure with an eloquent circumstantial clause: ﴿وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا مَعَهُمْ﴾. That which they reject is itself the Truth, and it is itself a confirmer (muṣaddiq) of what they have. The rejection thus falls on a subject that is fit to be an affirmation of what they hold, if they were to dismantle the restriction in "sent down to us."
"Say: why then did you kill the prophets of God before?": The question that dismantles the claim
The command to speak at the head of the second half of the verse moves the stance from theoretical argument to historical indictment. The question uses what they claim against what they did. If you entrust yourselves to what was sent down to you, the prophets you killed before were the ones who brought it. The killing itself is testimony to the structure of your stance: the subject is not what is sent down, but what serves the group.
The expression "prophets of God" (anbiyāʾa llāh) is a point of contemplation. Had it said "your prophets," it would have opened a dialogue on the prophet's affiliation with the group. But the text attributes them directly to God, turning the killing from an internal dispute into an aggression against the Divine site itself. The interrogation in its form is a denunciation, assuming that the killer cannot combine the claim of trust in what was sent down with the act of killing the one who brings it.
The verb "you kill" (taqtulūn) comes in the present/continuous despite being qualified by "before" (min qablu) which refers it to the past. This construction reveals a structure: the act is in the past, but its image is continuous in the present. It is as if the killer, after the killing, remains in their actual form. Thus, verse (2:87) preceded with the same construction: ﴿فَفَرِيقًا كَذَّبْتُمْ وَفَرِيقًا تَقْتُلُونَ﴾: the present tense for the act of killing. The rule: the stance a person takes toward a prophet is inseparable from an image that remains in their being, not cut off by the time of the act.
Relation of the verse to what preceded it: Detailing the restriction claimed in 89-90
The preceding verse (2:90) revealed that the driver beneath the rejection of what God sent down was "envy that God would bring down out of His favor upon whomever He wills among His servants." Our verse here clarifies the form of this envy. Envy takes the form of claiming a monopoly on descent: "sent down to us" means that descent is restricted to the group, and anything else is not a descent. Thus, envy in the driver manifests as the claim of restriction, and restriction leads to the rejection of what is outside it.
The pattern in the Quran repeats in another similar form. The Quran notes in all these places that the structure of restriction in belonging leads to the rejection of what is outside belonging. Therefore, the Quran moves the logic from restriction to act: one who restricts trust to their group's share ends up killing whoever brings what exceeds that restriction. The slain prophets are testimony to this path.
The logic concludes with the fact that trust in the Quran is not an identity, but an orientation toward whatever descends from God's favor, whatever its face. One who makes it an identity is forced to kill whoever brings the same thing in another face, because the other face breaks the monopoly. The rule: trust that is closed upon the group necessarily ends in killing the prophet, not because the prophet is outside trust, but because his arrival reveals that trust was never restricted.
Le Coran révèle cette structure par une proposition circonstancielle éloquente : ﴿وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا مَعَهُمْ﴾.
