Commentary
The imperative "be" asks for a becoming in the name and not in the state. They did not say do the work of the prophets, nor turn toward the Lord of all the worlds. They asked for enrolment under a naming: be returners, or be helpers. And the "or" that sets the two apart uncovers what they hold in common. In the passage before this one the two parties are rivals, yet they agree on a single condition, that finding the way is suspended on membership of a name. Every monopolistic claim of that kind makes the two adversaries one in structure. Whoever holds guidance hostage to a name is sitting in his rival's cage.
The root h-w-d is a verb at its origin. Hādū is they returned, they turned back, a noble description of the state of returning to God. Hūdan is a frozen noun naming enrolment in one particular group, cut loose from the act of returning and left as an inherited label. That move, from a verb to a noun, is the heart of what the verse lays bare: a word that once described a good act has hardened into a banner of monopoly. The same happened to naṣārā, from the root n-ṣ-r. At its origin it is helping and backing, a verb that describes whoever gives help, and then it set hard as a title carried by one who helps no one.
"Say: rather the way of Abraham." Bal is a particle that cancels what came before it and puts something else in its place. What is cancelled is the monopoly, and what is put in its place is the way of Abraham. The root m-l-l has been read before as a track worn open by walking it again and again. Abraham comes before every naming the two parties carry, and his way lies open to whoever walks it. The answer does not set up a third party. It pulls the quarrel down to a layer older than all the parties, the layer before the name.
"Leaning toward truth." The root ḥ-n-f has the nucleus ḥ-n, a purity that pushes through to the inside, and the fāʾ is a separating that breaks apart. So the ḥanīf, by the make of his root, is one whose inside has been cleared and who has come away from the deviations. From the same root the language takes ḥanaf, the leaning of the foot: first the departure from an apparent straightness in the way a body stands, then used of one who turns off from the false toward the true. Leaning is therefore a posture of the body tilted away from the counterfeit before it is membership in any school. Abraham turned off from the idols before he arrived at the Lord of all the worlds, and leaning of this kind is a stage in the structure: letting the counterfeit go is the condition for taking the sound in.
"He was not one of those who split their loyalty." The root sh-r-k has the nucleus sh-r, a spreading that runs on, and the kāf is a gathering. Splitting loyalty, by the make of its root, is loyalty spread out and parcelled among more than one centre. The closing negation is flat: Abraham did not split his. This is the second face of the leaning. As it is a turning away from the counterfeit, it is also a gathering of loyalty into one direction, and neither face comes first. Whoever turns away from the counterfeit without drawing his centre to one stays lost, and whoever claims one centre without turning away from the counterfeit has split his loyalty without noticing it.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: leaning toward truth is in this verse a posture older than every naming, a turn away from the counterfeit and a drawing of loyalty into a single centre, and the way of Abraham lies open to whoever takes up that posture instead of being held by the people of a name.
The verse opens on a scene of rivalry: each party calls to its own name and makes finding the way hang on membership in it. The two calls differ in content and agree in structure, and whoever makes the way hang on a name is sitting in his rival's cage. The answer, "rather", voids that whole frame and then sets up the way of Abraham, from the root m-l-l: a track worn open by repeated walking, older than every naming. Then "leaning toward truth" comes from the root ḥ-n-f as the description of a posture and not of a membership: an inward clearing that comes away from deviation toward the true, its first sense in the language being the leaning of the foot, the stance of a body and not the placard of a group. And the verse closes by denying the split loyalty of the root sh-r-k, which by its make is loyalty spread over more than one centre: the second face of the leaning, for the turn away from the counterfeit is complete only when loyalty is gathered into one source. What holds the verse together is that ḥ-n-f and m-l-l both describe a posture and a track, not a party and not a badge.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as: the Jews called people to Judaism, the Christians to Christianity, and the Muslims to Islam, which is the creed of Abraham.
A root-reading
The verse rejects the quarrel of names and points to what precedes them: ḥanīf is the body's posture of leaning toward what is true, not the name of a community. Polytheism is the splitting of loyalty. A reading that takes "Ḥanīfiyya" out of the list of religions and places it at a level prior to them.
Deux lectures
Lecture courante

"Be returners, or be helpers, and you will find your way": the condition of guidance in the form of affiliation
The verse moves the dialogue into its dialectical form: "They said: be returners (hūdan), or be helpers (naṣārā), and you will find your way." The choice of the imperative "be" accompanies what is called in dialectic "social reductionism": guidance is achieved by joining a specific sect. The verse reveals a logical structure: whoever makes affiliation a condition for guidance has made the sect the center before the subject.
The verb "you will find your way" (tahtadū) in the form of the response to the command denotes an entailed result. It is as if the speaker says: if you become "returners" or "helpers," the logical result is that you will be guided. The phrasing in its construction reveals an implicit monopoly: guidance is restricted to the two sects, so it is not outside them. This is the same structure of restriction that appeared in 2:111: "None shall enter the Garden except one who is a returner or a helper." The suric arc is consistent with itself: the claim of restricting salvation is inseparable from the claim of restricting guidance.
The response in the verse is transmitted in the form of a command: "Say: rather the way of Abraham, leaning toward truth (ḥanīfan)." "Rather" (bal) is a particle of digression that denies what preceded and affirms what follows. The denied is the restriction of affiliation to the two sects, and the affirmed is the way of Abraham in a specific form: ḥanīfan. The ḥanīf in the root ḥ-n-f denotes leaning away from deviation toward uprightness. The choice is worth pondering: the ḥanīf is linked to what precedes the sects, not what follows them.
"He was not one of those who split their loyalty": specializing the denial to suit the state
The conclusion in the verse denies Abraham from "splitting loyalty" (shirk) with a concrete phrasing: "He was not one of those who split their loyalty (mushrikīn)." The choice is significant. The text does not say "and he was not of the returners or the helpers," but "of the mushrikīn." The denial in its form is linked to the subject that suits Abraham's time. The "returners" and "helpers" (as sectarian names) were not in his time, so it is not said of him that he was not of them. But splitting loyalty (polytheism) was in his time, and the self continues to slide into it in every time. Thus the denial takes the form that suits both the temporal and psychological context.
This is a linguistic law that the Qur'an uses in more than one place. Denial in the Qur'an is often directed toward the subject that should be denied of the agent, not to what is foreign to him. In Āl ʿImrān: "Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a person leaning toward truth (ḥanīf), one who handed himself over (muslim), and he was not one of those who split their loyalty" (3:67). Here the denial is completed in all its forms: not a Jew, not a Christian, not a mushrik. The two verses are complementary: in al-Baqarah, it suffices with denying polytheism because the dialogue is with the polytheists or with those who claim Abraham's descent in a way that summons clarification in that place; and in Āl ʿImrān, the denial is completed because the context summons freeing Abraham from every later attribution.
The rule: affiliation in the Qur'an ends at a position of monotheism, not at the name of a sect. Whoever introduces into his affiliation a leaning toward splitting loyalty has exited the way of Abraham by whatever name he calls himself. And whoever preserves his monotheism is in the way of Abraham by whatever name he calls himself. The name in the Qur'an is not the center of affiliation, but the position itself. The position uses names as tools for describing itself, not as identities in which the self hides.
Relationship to what precedes and follows: the transition from descent to position
The verse comes after a sequence confirming that earning is individual (2:134). It proposes a dialectical image that summons moving affiliation from descent to sect. The claim says: you are not of us by descent, so be of us by name. The Qur'an replies that both descent and name are insufficient. True affiliation is to a position, not to a descent nor a name.
The next verse 2:136 will manifest this position in its complete form: "Say: we have attained awareness in God and what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham..." Awareness in everything that was sent down in every sequence of the sequences of prophethood. The suric arc moves affiliation from the claim of restriction to the claim of inclusion. Whoever attains awareness in everything that was sent down is in the way of Abraham in truth, because the way of Abraham is the reason for everything sent down after him. One who throws himself into a sect that denies what is with another has exited the way of Abraham by his own act, even if he attributes himself to it.
The rule: Abraham's way in the Qur'an is not a name defined by a specific sect, but a position that joins between monotheism and awareness in everything sent down. Whoever narrows in either of these two halves has exited. The "returners" narrowed in awareness of what was sent down, restricting it to what was with them. The "helpers" narrowed in monotheism, introducing into it what contradicts it. The Qur'an returns the way to its original form before narrowing: leaning toward truth, monotheistic, and aware of everything sent down.
