Commentary
The root k-f-r in the language is covering. The covering in this verse is not the denial of an existence as a matter of knowledge; it is the laying of a cover over a presence the self already knows. That is why the question is "how" and not "why". It is not a search for a convincing reason; it asks after the working mechanism by which somebody who has been through a presence can go on covering it. Experience is what disables the covering: no cover holds securely over a thing the hand has already touched.
The root m-w-t is the cutting off of self-feeding, complete stillness. The first death in the verse is the state of not being there at all, before the shaping. The human was not a thing worth mentioning. Then "He brought you to life": a passage out of stillness into energy of one's own. That passage is not an outside argument a person hears; it is an experience under his own skin. He is alive now, and was not before. Once the first experience stands at that degree of clarity, his covering becomes the denial of an event he himself went through.
The ordering by "then" marks a sequence in time. After the first life comes a second dying, the death in this world, then a second bringing to life, the raising. So the verse draws five states in a row: not being, being, ending, resumption, return. Each state leads into the next by a settled pattern. A person meets the first as knowledge, the not-being before he was formed; the second in fact, the life he is inside; the third as a near likelihood, the death he is promised; the fourth as a promise; and the fifth as a closing. How then does someone already inside this cycle put a cover over its engine?
The root r-j-ʿ is a going back to an original source. Inside it is the admission that the motion was circular from the start: a person came out of a source, carried a role, and will go back to that same source. The verse does not present the return as a fresh threat but as the closing of a pattern already running. "To Him" is to the point life set out from. The return is not travel to a strange country; it is a coming back to the source a person stayed connected to the whole way. The word precedes the term: the raising is not an event hanging in a distant future, it is the closing of a circle you are standing inside now.
"How", not "why": the verse is not hunting for a reason behind the covering but for its mechanism, and the sharpness of that question cuts into the middle of existence. Covering, k-f-r, is a laying-over, and no cover holds securely over a thing the hand has touched and the skin has been through; experience is what disables it. Then the verse recites five states in a row, all of them undergone rather than heard about: a first death, m-w-t, the cutting off of self-feeding, before the shaping; then life, ḥ-y-y, the passage out of stillness into energy of one's own, the state he is inside now; then a second dying still to come; then a second bringing to life; then a return, r-j-ʿ, a going back to an original source, closing the circle. The motion was circular from the first: a person came out of a source and goes back to it, and the return is no new threat but the finish of a pattern already running. "To Him is your return" is put in the passive, which shows that this movement is not a choice to be voted on but a law that runs whether it is recognized or not. So how is a cover laid over a source that is itself part of your own cycle?
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
Read as a rebuke: how can you deny God when you were once nothing, He gave you life, then will cause you to die, then will resurrect you, and then you return to Him for reckoning?
A root-reading
(K F R) = covering over something that is present. (Ḥ Y Y) = self-sustaining energy. (M W T) = the cut-off of that feed. (R J ʿ) = return to the original source. "How can you keep covering" becomes: how can you go on concealing a source you have already experienced directly? The verse walks the reader through his own timeline: a dead state, then life, then death, then life, then return to the source. Covering is hard to sustain against a source that has already reached you.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"How do you disbelieve": the cosmic argument from the biography of death and life
The verse opens with the astonished interrogative "how do you disbelieve in God". "How" asks about manner, it does not ask "do you disbelieve" (existence) nor "why" (cause), but "how" (means). As if it denies the very possibility of disbelief. And the argument that follows is not a philosophical disputation nor a punitive threat, but a recital of the very biography of the addressee himself.
"And you were dead and He gave you life; then He will cause you to die; then He will give you life again; then to Him you will be returned." Four stations: the first death (the non-existence prior to existence), the first life (this worldly life), the second death (the end of this world), the second life (the resurrection), then the return. Five states in a single verse. And the sequence thumma conveys spaced succession in time: transitions of finite duration, not an automatic flow.
The sharper point: the addressee is not being invited to believe in something outside himself. He himself is the evidence. His own biography, that he was dead and then became alive, is the argument that estranges disbelief from him. As if the verse says: He who transported you from a prior death to a present life is able to transport you to a following death and then a third life. This is not a prediction but the eliciting of what is already manifest. The extracted rule: in the Qur'an, the strongest argument for the resurrection is not the planet, nor the sky, nor the mountain, but the human himself. The transition from non-being to being has occurred once, and the firmest argument that it could occur a second time is that it has, in fact, occurred once.
One might reflect that this resembles what contemporary biology studies under the name of emergent complexity, the emergence of life from non-living matter, the emergence of consciousness from a brain of cells, the emergence of the self from electromagnetic patterns, and perhaps this connects with what this argument describes.
The death-life-death-life cycle: a recurring cosmic pattern
The verse draws a repeating binary cycle: death → life → death → life. And this pattern is not particular to the human; it is a cosmic law the Qur'an weaves in many places.
Notice in al-Rūm: "He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living" (30:19), life and death each extract the other. In Yāsīn: "and a sign for them is the dead earth: We have brought it to life and brought out grain from it, and from it they eat" (36:33), the dead earth returns to life, a sign for the possibility of resurrection. In al-Ḥajj: "and you see the earth lifeless; but when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells and brings forth every joyful pair" (22:5), seasonal revival as a model for the final revival.
The extracted rule: death in the Qur'an is not the opposite of existence but a phase of existence. The transition between the two states is the law, not the stability of either.
Perhaps this connects with what the study of transformations in biology discloses: every cell in the body dies and is replaced, and the body itself, in its ordinary life, carries the images of death in every moment. Death is not an ending that comes one day but a thread woven into every day. And likewise the life after death described in the verse is not a strange leap but the extension of a pattern that happens in the self every hour.
The word in the Qur'an precedes the term: "dead, and He gave you life" is not a metaphysical description of your person in the past, but a reminder of a knowledge that lives in every cell of your body: you are a structure in continuous flow between life and death.
