﴾ Do not let those who hasten into disbelief grieve you. They will never harm Allah in anything. Allah intends not to make for them any share in the Hereafter, and for them is a tremendous punishment. ﴿
The wāw joins a prohibition, and the transitive verb takes the kāf of the singular addressee as its object and the relative as its subject: let them not grieve you. Their clause, "who hasten into disbelief," defines them by a renewing act. Hastening, from s-r-ʿ, denotes a narrowing that runs through and then emerges from the depth, and the mufāʿala form carries an initiative that relaunches itself one round after another. The particle "in" places their movement within disbelief, so their repeated rush becomes the very scene from which the power to grieve is stripped away.
The emphatic particle takes their pronoun as its noun, after which the future negation governs the present verb and denies that it will come about. Harm, from ḍ-r-r, is a heavy drawing together that runs on, the repetition of the r then thickening the penetration of the effect, but the negation blocks its arrival at Allah. "Anything" is indefinite in a context of negation, so it exhausts the least measure of harm. The limit stated in the sentence is the side toward which the harm would go: the object of "harm" is the name of Allah alone, so the negation falls upon the effect's reaching Him, while it is the following sentence that mentions what returns upon them.
The present verb "intends" opens a new sentence with the name of Allah as its subject, and its object is the clause "that He not make for them a share." The negation stands within what the intention bears upon, and the lām makes them the side of that denied making. Share, from ḥ-ẓ-ẓ, is a containment that narrows on what it holds, then a lid is laid over it that veils it from others, and the repetition of the ẓ doubles the veiling, so that what is contained closes upon the one it belongs to. It comes indefinite in a context of negation, and the adverbial "in the Hereafter" confines its field. Intention, negation and adverbial thus converge upon a complete deprivation of any portion in that field.
The wāw joins a nominal sentence in which "for them" precedes the indefinite subject "punishment." The correspondence is plain: the absence of a share for them in the Hereafter has as its counterpart their being assigned a punishment. Its qualifier, "tremendous," from ʿ-ẓ-m, is a fused grip covered by a thick, enveloping closure and then joined together into one mass, so it carries whatever is thick in body or in worth. Magnitude occupies the whole side of the description and makes the outcome set against the share thick and wide.
The prohibition keeps those who hasten into disbelief from grieving the one addressed, and it gives the reason in a cutting emphasis: they will never harm Allah in anything. The negation stays attached to one side, which the object states outright: the name of Allah itself. Allah's intention then appears, that He not make for them a share in the Hereafter, and its counterpart comes affirmed: for them is a tremendous punishment. The repetition of "for them" knots the negation and the affirmation to the very people who hasten; the share is denied in the Hereafter, the punishment is affirmed for them, and in both places the lām remains what ties the outcome to those same hasteners. The two indefinites, the share and the punishment, keep their full breadth, while the renewing verb leaves the responsibility with those whom the text defined by their hastening into disbelief.
