﴾ Those who purchased disbelief with trust will never harm Allah in anything, and for them is a painful punishment. ﴿
The emphatic particle opens a sentence whose noun is the relative, and makes its clause a past verb assigned to the group: they purchased. Purchase, from sh-r-y, denotes a confining that runs through and then extends and travels on, and the iftiʿāl form brings the actors into a deliberate exchange. The relative gathers those in whom the act took place, the act whose two sides the verse will name, so its clause is the whole of its definition; the past tense fixes the choice as something that happened, not as a passing thought.
The direct object "disbelief" is what is bought, and the bāʾ introduces "trust" as its price or its counterpart. Disbelief, from k-f-r, is a deep meeting that opens a split and then runs on, covering the place, so it carries an active covering over. Trust, for its part, is the thing paid out in the construction of the bāʾ. The image of exchange makes disbelief what is taken and trust what is given up, revealing a choice that puts the direction of covering in place of the direction of security and trust.
The future negation governs the present verb and denies the harm to come. Harm, from ḍ-r-r, is a heavy drawing together that runs through, the repetition of the r then thickening its spread, but the object "Allah" remains far above its reaching Him. "Anything" is indefinite in a context of negation, so it exhausts the least amount conceivable. Their bargain recoils upon its own owners alone: Allah's side is guarded from its effect, and the sentence then moves on to the consequence that is theirs.
The wāw joins a nominal sentence in which "for them" comes first, so the pronoun refers back to those who purchased. The subject "punishment" is indefinite and qualified by "painful." The root ʾ-l-m is a sharp bursting out that falls and then attaches and takes hold, after which the mīm draws in what was caught and shuts upon it: a limit that falls, catches and closes, describing what takes, not what is taken. The word alīm, moreover, is of the faʿīl pattern, a fixed property that stays with what it describes rather than a state that passes over it. The fronting of "for them" assigns them the outcome, yet the qualifier still bears on "punishment" and not on them, so what is described as gripping and not letting go is the punishment.
The verse confirms the ruling upon those whom the purchase of disbelief with trust defines. The object fixes what they took, and the bāʾ fixes what they set down in return, so the bargain stands on its two stated sides: a disbelief taken and a trust given up. The future negation then cuts off their harming Allah in anything, so the result of their bargain does not pass over to Him. Setting "will never harm" against "for them is a punishment" prevents their inability to harm from being read as a rescue for them; the result comes back to them by the very lām in "for them." The pronoun at the close refers back to them: for them is a painful punishment. So the movement stays with the owners of the choice, and the description of the punishment continues to rest on what the word itself pronounced: the density of the pain and its lasting.
