﴾ Say: whether you conceal what is within your chests or bring it into view, Allah knows it. He knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. Allah is powerful over every thing. ﴿
Concealing, from kh-f-y, is a loosening that pierces as it separates and then extends into what is fine, so the thing leaves the field of appearing. Bringing into view carries it to the surface, and "or" sets the two conditions under a single ruling: Allah knows it.
The known begins with what is within the chests, the vessels of the inward, and then widens to what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is an appearing out of depth that attaches and then gathers. Divine knowledge has no need for a person to bring into view what he has concealed.
The verse closes with knowledge and then with power over every thing. The root q-d-r is a boundary made firm and exactly set, running according to its own measure. So the known is not outside that measuring, and what is concealed makes no field outside the encompassing.
What is in the chest seems the furthest of things from the witnessing of others, yet the verse does not leave it as a region standing beside the heavens and the earth. It lies inside that totality, and it is named first because concealing begins there in a person's awareness. What its bearer counts as inward does not step outside the "what is in" repeated for the two wider fields; the human inward is covered from a limited gaze, not from the knowledge that has encompassed the region and what is in it.
For this reason bringing into view makes no new knowledge for Allah, just as concealing makes no passing ignorance that is then removed. The two conditions uncover a person's stance toward what he holds within: a withholding or a showing. The ending, for its part, forbids the severing of knowledge from power, so that the known does not become something uncovered that measure does not reach. Everything moving between the chest and appearing stays inside an encompassing knowledge and a power out of which nothing passes, and so concealing loses the illusion that it is a way out of the reckoning, without the self losing responsibility for what it chose to hold or to bring into view.
A thing's position with respect to a person changes between concealing and bringing into view, while its position with respect to Allah's knowledge does not change. The circle then widens from the chests to the heavens and the earth and is closed with power over every thing, and what is covered from creation stays inside the knowledge and the measuring.
