﴾ Let those who make trust secure not take those who cover as protecting intimates instead of those who make trust secure. Whoever does that has nothing from God, except that you guard yourselves from them as a protection. God warns you of Himself. To God is the destination. ﴿
The prohibition addresses those producing security. They must not replace their protecting intimacy with a bond centered in covering. Walī, from w-l-y, is a connection extended without interruption, nearness carrying protection and direction.
"Instead of" exposes substitution, not every passing interaction. The act places one governing bond where another should stand, which is why the consequence is stated as having nothing from God in that act.
The exception is guardedness. Wiqāya, from w-q-y, is a connection made firm at a boundary and extended as protection. Protection under danger does not become a new center of allegiance.
The warning names God Himself, then points to the destination. Maṣīr, from ṣ-y-r, is a course repeatedly flowing until it becomes a final condition. A protective bond is also a direction, and direction reaches an end.
The exception comes after a severe judgment denying that the act has anything from God, so it cannot become a door that erases what precedes it. It gathers only the condition of guarding: a harm to be warded off, not a center to be exchanged; protection of the self, not surrender of its direction. The distinction remains within the words themselves. Taking someone as a governing intimate builds a ruling bond, while guardedness places a screen at the boundary of danger.
The warning then moves the measure from fear of people to God. One who guards against harm does not thereby make the source of harm the final reference. The self being protected is moving toward a destination that the feared person does not own. Guardedness is therefore read not from outward motion alone, but from the center to which the bond continues to return. Appearance may change under fear; direction is not exchanged. When destination follows warning, protecting the self also means protecting it from escaping a near harm at the price of distance from its end.
The verse distinguishes protection at a boundary from surrendering the center. Fear may require a guard; it does not erase the destination.
