﴾ Then, at a remove: stop there. They will come to know. ﴿
The verse is not joined by the simple "and." It comes with thumma, and the difference between the two is everything here. The "and" gathers into one sequence; thumma orders, and leaves an interval between the two things it orders.
So what repeated is not two phrases in one breath. A knowing, then a delay, then a knowing. The delay is the only new word in the verse, and it is the word that carries its sense.
Whoever reads the repetition as emphasis alone has missed that the particle says otherwise. This is not one voice raised twice; it is two steps with a reach between them.
The sentence returns letter for letter, with nothing missing from it. But the first time it was the first thing to fall on the circling, and the second time it falls after an interval. A restraint that has to be laid again after a while reports a motion that started up again.
The form itself says as much. Had the first kallā stopped the circling completely, the second would not have been needed. Its coming twice with thumma between draws what happens: they halt, they return to their ring, and they are halted a second time.
And the second knowing is another knowing, not a rerun of the first. The root ʿ-l-m is what rises from a depth and is then gathered into a shape by which a thing is told apart, and what gathers twice is not one shape seen twice. A knowledge comes over them, and then, past its interval, another.
Four of the five opening verses close on the same ending: "they are asking one another," "they are in disagreement," "they will come to know," "they will come to know." A closing word is heard twice over, once as sense and once as sound, so the ear takes in a repetition while the sense advances a step.
Then that sound breaks off all at once. What follows this verse closes on an alif with tanwīn instead: ﴿أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا﴾, "Did We not set the earth as a bedding laid soft?" The closing turns because the subject has turned.
And look where the turn falls. They are promised a knowing twice, and then the promised day is not described to them at all. What is pointed at is the ground under their feet. Whoever has not read what lies under his own foot will not be persuaded by a description of what lies past his death.
So the joining is by thumma and not by the simple "and," and the only new word in the verse is the one that carries its sense: an interval between two steps, not an emphasis inside one breath. Then the sentence returns letter for letter and differs by its place: a restraint laid again after a while reports a motion that came back, and the second knowing is a second shape gathered rather than the first one seen again. And at the close the rhyme is doing work: four of the five end on the same ending, so the ear takes in a repetition while the sense advances, and then the sound breaks off into an alif with tanwīn when the subject turns. A promise of knowing is not followed by a description of the promised day, but by a question about the ground under their feet.
The only new word is the one that carries the meaning: an interval between two steps, not a voice raised twice. A restraint laid again reports a motion resumed, and a second gathering is a second shape. Then the ending changes with the subject, and a promise of knowing is followed not by a picture of the day but by a question about the ground.
﴾ Puis, à distance : halte là. Ils vont savoir. ﴿
