﴾ Stop there. They will come to know. ﴿
No statement of theirs has been quoted. No claim has been reported. And still kallā comes down at the head of the reply. What was rejected, if no saying was cited to reject?
The motion itself was rejected. Three verses had described a turning: a question circulating in a ring, a weight with no visible rim, and a standing in which each has his back to the other. So the word arrives arguing with none of them and lays its hand on the whole circling.
And its place is before the news, not after it. The motion is stopped first, and then what is to be said is said. Whoever wants to be heard by people inside a din begins by quieting the din, not by raising his voice.
Then a verb with no object. They will know what? The verse does not say. This is a fourth place in four verses where the identification is due and is held back.
But the holding-back is of another kind here. What was held back before was the identity of the news; what is held back now is the content of the knowing. In truth these are one: what they will know is precisely what was not named to them, and it will not be named before it is known.
The root ʿ-l-m is what rises out of a depth, extends, and is then gathered into a shape by which a thing is told apart, which is why the mark on a road and the sign set on a thing come from it. Knowledge is a mark that falls in a person and lets him separate one thing from another. And the news was described as having its edge veiled, so the promise is that an edge will appear for it, and appear inside them.
The prefixed sa- brings the promise close rather than putting it off. Nor is the promised knowing a piece of information added to what they have. It is the ending of the very condition they were described by: whoever has seen the mark is no longer among those disagreeing over it.
And the doer has not changed since the surah opened. The ones who were asking one another are the ones who will know. No other people are brought in to know in their place: it is that same ring which is expected to open. Then the sentence returns exactly as it stands: "Then, at a remove: stop there. They will come to know." What has been heard is not yet the whole of what is said.
A halt laid on a motion rather than an answer given to an argument, and then a knowing promised with nothing named to be known. What had no visible rim is promised an edge, and the edge will show inside the very people who were circling. The verse does not answer the question; it names a day on which the question falls away of itself.
﴾ Halte là. Ils vont savoir. ﴿
