Commentary
The surah opened on people asking one another. Here they are, being asked. Nothing changed but their side of the question: they stood where the one who requests stands, and now they stand where the one requested of stands.
And the two questions are worlds apart. The first had no object and no responder in it; this one admits of a single answer, and its answer is under the foot of the one asked. An interrogative and then a negation, so that an affirmation comes out shaped as a question.
This is workmanship in the address. They are not told "We set"; the admission is drawn out of them. Whoever is made to say "yes, indeed" has borne witness with his own tongue, and testimony an opponent speaks stands firmer than a report handed to him.
Five verses have passed with no speaker naming himself. From this word the first person plural enters and does not leave until the whole list of the making is finished.
The root j-ʿ-l is a holding in a cavity, then a bringing-out of what was held, then its attachment to a place that keeps it. So this making is not the bringing of a thing out of nothing; it is the taking of something already standing and the setting of it into a station that is not its own self.
The verse therefore does not say the earth was brought into being here. It says it was put into a station. What is asked about is a function and not a substance: what this base under their feet was set there to do.
The root ʾ-r-ḍ is a breaking-forth that runs on and is then drawn together with weight until it settles. In its own structure, then, the earth is the bearer on which weights are laid and which is itself laid upon nothing.
And then it is called mihād. The root m-h-d is a containing that thins until it is soft, and is then fixed so that it can carry what is placed on it, whence the cradle of an infant and the levelling of ground to be trodden. Softness is inside the word, and without it the word could not name the resting-place of one who cannot hold himself up.
Look at the pairing. The hardest and steadiest thing they know is called by the word made for the softest thing spread under a body. It was not called a settled floor, nor a built structure. It was called a bedding, and the word chooses itself.
Nor does a bedding describe the place alone. A bedding says something about whoever is laid on it: it is prepared for one who does not keep himself. So the answer drawn out of the one questioned goes deeper than he knew when he said "yes, indeed." He granted that a soft place had been readied under him, and granted, along with it, that he is one for whom such things are readied.
And this is the first of a pair in the list, so it is completed by what comes after it: ﴿وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا﴾, "and the mountains as pegs driven in?" A softness under the side is no use if it slides.
So the side the people stand on shifts: they were asking one another, and now they are the ones asked, and this is a question that admits of one answer only, whose answer is under the foot of the one asked. Then the first person plural enters the surah for the first time and does not leave until the list is complete. Najʿal, from j-ʿ-l: the bringing-out of what was held and its attachment to a place that keeps it, so what is claimed is a station and not a substance. Al-arḍ, from ʾ-r-ḍ: a base that runs on and is then drawn together with weight until it settles, the bearer and not the borne. Then it is called mihād, from m-h-d: a containing that thins until it is soft and is then fixed so as to carry what is laid on it, the very word made for the resting-place of one who cannot hold himself up. So the hardest thing under them is named with the word for the softest thing spread under a body, and whoever grants that he has a bedding has granted that he is one for whom a bedding is laid.
The questioners are turned into the questioned, and the answer lies under their feet. The verb sets a standing thing into a station rather than bringing it out of nothing, so what is claimed is a function and not a substance. And the steadiest thing they know is named with the word for a cradle: whoever grants that he has a bedding has granted that he is one for whom a bedding is laid.
Commentaire

وتُترجَمُ: «Have We not made the earth a resting place?»
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as an announcement that the earth was spread out and made tractable for dwelling; mihād is glossed as a spread bed or a firm settled floor; and what is recounted in the inherited reading about the spreading and levelling of the earth is joined to it. Rendered: "Have We not made the earth a resting place?"
A reading that brings the bedding close to a settled floor and stops at the favour of being made able to dwell.
A root-reading
The interrogative over a negation lets an affirmation come out as a question whose answer is drawn from the one asked, and they are the very people who were asking one another at the opening. Najʿal (j-ʿ-l): the bringing-out of what was held and its attachment to a place that keeps it, so what is claimed is a station and not the production of a substance. Al-arḍ (ʾ-r-ḍ): a base that runs and is then drawn together with weight until it settles, a bearer and not a borne thing. Mihād (m-h-d): a containing that thins until soft and is then fixed to carry what is placed on it, the word for the resting-place of one who cannot hold himself. The description says as much about the one laid on it as about the place.
A reading that hears in "bedding" softness, preparation, and the dependence of whoever is laid on it, not merely a being-settled in a place.
The two readings do not conflict. The first reads the favour of the place; the second reads, in the word, the condition of whoever is laid on it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The manner of the address turns over at this verse. They were promised a knowing twice, and then the promised day was not described to them by a single word. What was pointed at was the ground under their feet, and about that they were questioned. The case for what is not seen is taken from what is trodden every day.
And what they are asked about is neither strange nor rare. Nobody contests that the earth is a floor one stands on. That is exactly where the weight of the question lies: it falls on what is not denied because it is not noticed. What carries a person is the first thing he stops seeing.
And the word chosen is a word of dependence. A bedding is prepared for one who does not hold himself, so whoever grants that he has a bedding has granted that he did not spread it for himself. The whole argument sits in one word: whoever accepts that he was laid down cannot claim that he laid himself.
Perhaps the choosing of a word for softness to name the hardest thing known agrees with something of what those who study the earth report today: that what lies under the feet is, on their account, not one rigid body but a thin skin by comparison with what lies beneath it, one that shifts without breaking from what bears it. And perhaps it also resembles what is observed of human communities in every region: that the first thing they built, they built on ground they had not made, and that the first thing a settled community forgets is the ground that let it settle. All of this is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse itself said nothing in description of the earth except that it was set as a bedding made ready, and settled not one letter about its structure or its history.
