Commentary
The verb is not repeated. In place of "did We not set the mountains," the noun is carried onto what precedes it by a single wāw, and the bedding and the pegs fall under one setting, not two favours counted off in a row.
The root j-b-l denotes a massing that clings to its place and then extends within it, whence jubila ʿalā something, said of one built upon it in a make-up that never parts from him. Fixity is present in the word before anything is said about it.
The word is nevertheless not left at its fixity; it is followed by a description that moves it from fixity to function: the point lies in what they hold fast by being fixed, not in the fact that they are fixed.
The root w-t-d is a joining completed by a driving-through that settles in place. A peg is a piece of wood struck until it disappears into the ground, and it is never regarded for itself; what is regarded is whatever has been tied to it.
The word is thus a relation before it is a thing: a peg in empty ground with nothing tied to it means nothing. To call the mountains pegs is to say that they serve something else, and they are the largest thing on which the eye falls.
What is tied is then left unmentioned. The verse says "pegs" and is silent about what the peg holds, leaving the other end open, as the name of the news and the object of the knowing were left open. This is a surah that gives a function and withholds the naming of what the function serves.
The two words belong to one setting, something spread and something driven in, and neither stands right without the other. A bedding with nothing to fix it slides out from under the one lying on it, and a peg in ground without a bedding offers nothing to sleep on.
The two descriptions are therefore one description of one condition, a place where one may lie down without being shifted. That is what they were asked about, rather than the mountains alone or the earth alone.
The surah returns to this very word, al-jibāl, in another place: ﴿وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا﴾, "And the gathered masses are set moving, and they have become a running appearance with nothing in it." What was called a peg is set moving and becomes what is seen yet is not there. The fixity by which they were described is a setting, not a nature; a peg holds while it is driven in, and whoever drove it in has the power to draw it out.
Since the verb is not repeated, the setting remains one act that takes in both ends. Al-jibāl comes from j-b-l, a massing that clings to its place and extends within it, so that fixity is in the root before the description. Awtādan then carries the fixity over into a function, from w-t-d, a joining completed by a driving-through that settles. A peg is known by what is tied to it rather than by itself, and the word is accordingly a relation, not a thing, with the largest thing in sight described as serving something else. What is tied is left unnamed, as the news and the object of the knowing were not named. ﴿مِهَادًا﴾, "a bedding laid soft," taken together with "pegs driven in," forms one description of one condition: a bedding that does not shift. The word then returns in this same surah, set moving and become a running appearance with nothing in it, and it becomes clear that the fixity is a station into which they were put and not a nature within them.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «And the mountains as stakes?»
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as announcing that the mountains steady the earth and keep it from lurching; the peg is explained as what is driven into the ground to hold a tent; and what is recounted about the earth having swayed until it was anchored by the mountains is joined to it. Rendered: "And the mountains as stakes?"
A reading that names what the pegs hold and attaches to it what was handed down about the anchoring of the earth.
A root-reading
The verb is not repeated, so bedding and pegs stand under one setting. Al-jibāl (j-b-l): a massing that clings to its place and extends within it, so fixity is already in the root. Awtād (w-t-d): a joining completed by a driving-through that settles, and a peg is known by what is tied to it and not by itself, so the word is a relation before it is a thing. What is tied is not named in the verse. Bedding together with pegs is one condition with two ends: a floor that does not slide. And the word returns later in the surah, set moving until it becomes a mirage, so the fixity is a station conferred and not a nature possessed.
A reading that hears in "pegs" a function hung on an end the verse never names, and in the word's later return the limit of that fixity.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names what is held and completes the picture; the second stops at a relation whose far end the verse left open. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The list that begins here is built out of couples, and each couple says one thing with two ends. What is being counted off is not a row of adjacent gifts but parts fitted to one another. A soft floor and a nail that stops it sliding: these are two conditions of one rest, not two separate favours.
And the word chosen for the second end is again a word of dependence. A peg holds only while it is driven, and it holds for something other than itself. So calling the mountains pegs strips them of independence in the very wording: the largest thing in sight is described by a term that cannot be known except through something else.
Then that same word returns in the surah, set moving. Whatever holds by placement holds on loan. The reader is being taught here to read fixity as a granted condition and not as an owned nature, which is the hardest thing to ask of anyone who has grown easy about what lies under him.
Perhaps the word for a peg agrees with something of what those who study mountains report today: that on their account a height carries an extent below the surface greater than what shows above it, so that less of it is visible than hidden, which is exactly the case of a peg, most of which disappears in order to hold what stands over it. And perhaps it also resembles what is observed of human dwellings across every age and region: that all of them are a spread thing and a driven thing, what is laid out and what fixes what is laid out, and no shelter is known that stood on one of the two alone. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse said of the mountains only that they were set as pegs, and mentioned neither what lies beneath them nor what is tied to them.
Tadabbur
