﴾ To your Lord is the point where it stops. ﴿
The prepositional phrase is put before the subject. Had the words come in their ordinary order, this would be a report about a place. Fronted, it becomes a restriction: there, and nowhere else.
And ilā is the particle for reaching a limit, so the particle itself already carries what the noun after it will name. A particle that ends, then a noun whose meaning is the ending: the two ends of the sentence say the same thing from two sides.
These two words, exactly as they stand, had already fallen in this Surah: ﴿وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ﴾, "and that I guide you to your Lord, so that you come to hold Him in awe." There they were the goal of a guidance offered to someone; here they are the goal of an hour asked about. Rabb, in r-b-b, is a running that stays alongside and holds to its charge and does not come away from it, so the ending is committed to the one who never detaches from what he tends. And the ka onto which the demand had caught at the head of this passage is the ka that returns here annexed to the Lord: you were the one asked, and the ending is to your own Lord.
The root n-h-y is a holding that stops at an edge and runs through whoever is inside it, and muntahā is the place of that stopping or its time. What was asked about at the head of this passage was an anchoring; what is named here is a stop at an edge. Anchorage and ending are two shapes of one running that reaches its end.
And this same root passed in this Surah four verses back, ﴿وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ﴾, "and held the self back from the pull." There a human being holds his own self at an edge that is his to hold; here is an edge that no one holds but the one it is ascribed to. A restraint that can be exercised within, and an ending that cannot be exercised without.
Then the attached pronoun at the end of the word. The Hour was named once at the head of this passage and its name was not repeated; a run of attached pronouns has carried it verse after verse, asking where its anchoring is, then what share the one addressed has in the recalling of it, then where its ending lies. What is not dated does not have its name repeated; it is known by being "it."
The prepositional phrase is fronted over the subject and the report turns into a restriction: there and nowhere else. The particle of the phrase is itself the particle of reaching a limit, so it says before the noun what the noun says after it. Rabb, from r-b-b, is a running that stays alongside and holds to its charge and does not come away, and the ka of address in it is the ka of the one questioned at the head of the passage, these two words having already stood in this Surah as the goal of a guidance offered. Muntahāhā, from n-h-y, is a holding that stops at an edge and runs through whoever is inside it, so what was asked about as an anchoring is answered as a stopping: two shapes of one running that reaches its end. The Surah had spoken the same root of a human being who held his own self back from its pull, so an edge a person sets on himself stands against an edge that only the Lord sets. And the pronoun at the word's end is the third of a run of pronouns carrying a name said once and never repeated.
