﴾ for whoever of you cuts out his own will (shāʾa) to become held together on one line (yastaqīm). ﴿
The li- came in the previous line and spread wide, ﴿إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ﴾. Now the same particle returns and narrows: "for whoever of you". One letter in two places, the first opening and the second sorting.
And the second does not cancel the first. The sending is general as it was said to be, and the benefit falls where the taking falls. The reminder is spread over all the worlds, and whoever wanted something of it put out his hand. A table is set for the whole house, and only the one who eats is fed.
The root sh-y-ʾ is a fine scattering that runs on and stops at no edge, and then the glottal stop cuts that running and brings one item out of it in a single stroke. Willing, in these letters, is a cutting-out: the separating of one from what will not be counted.
That is why min follows it. "Of you" takes a part and names the whole it is taken from. The verb separates; the particle says out of what: out of this very addressed body, not another people.
And they are the same people: those told ﴿وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ﴾ and asked ﴿فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ﴾. After the denial and the question they are not exchanged for others; a door is opened inside them for whoever comes out of it. Whoever wills has taken himself out of a number and become one that counts.
The root q-w-m is a knotting in the depth, then a ring that surrounds and ties what comes before to what comes after and then opens and lets it through, then a closing that grips what has been surrounded. The three letters give surrounding, tying and gripping; so the standing in this root is the holding of a gathered thing so that it does not fall apart, and rising upright is the fruit of the holding, not its origin.
Yastaqīm is the tenth form in the sense of becoming: to come to be held on a single line and not scatter. What is asked for is not a posture taken with the body but that what is scattered in a man gather onto one unbroken thread. And an with the present verb makes it something sought and not yet arrived: a door pointed to, not a condition described.
Two motions run against each other in one line. Shāʾa cuts one out of a body and so divides; yastaqīm gathers what is inside that one so that it does not come apart. He steps out of the number as a single man, and then draws himself together so as not to be scattered. Whoever is not separated out is never gathered in.
The li- returns from the previous line and does the opposite of what it did there: it spread over "the worlds", and here it sorts out "whoever of you". The particular does not cancel the general: the sending is spread, the benefit is taken. Sh-y-ʾ is the cutting of one out of a scattering, which is why the partitive min keeps it company and names the body cut from, the same addressed body that refused and was questioned. Then yastaqīm, from q-w-m, whose letters give surrounding, tying and gripping rather than height; the tenth form makes it a becoming: coming to be held on one line without unravelling. Two motions in a single line: a sorting that takes him out of the group, and a gathering that draws him onto himself.
Le li- était venu dans la ligne précédente et s'était étendu au large, ﴿إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ﴾.
