﴾ And you cut out no will of your own (tashāʾūn) except that God wills, the Lord who holds and raises all the worlds (rabb al-ʿālamīn). ﴿
The verb is the verb of the line before, ﴿لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ﴾. There it was past and spoken of them; here it is present and spoken to them. From "whoever of you wills" to "and you do not will": the speech turns and faces the addressed.
And the plural ending in tashāʾūn is a subject. The verb is not stripped from them and not handed to someone else; it stays ascribed to them inside the very sentence that denies it. What the denial falls on is the occurrence of the act, not its attribution, so it remains their act even here.
Mā, then illā, with nothing stated for the exception to be taken from. The exception is an empty-slotted one, and the negation does not come to rest until what follows illā gives it back. They are told first that they will nothing, and then the sentence refuses to close until willing has been returned inside a willing.
The wording is one at both ends, tashāʾūn and yashāʾa. One verb with two subjects, and the particle of exception between them does not put one in place of the other. The first stands where it stands; the second is the vessel it happens inside.
And the divine name is from ʾ-l-h, an intent that cuts away from everything else and runs toward one. So when the verb is ascribed to that name, a doer is not set beside a doer; what is set down is the one in whom all intent ends. A cutting-out inside a cutting-out.
The root r-b-b is a touch that holds and binds and does not part, and then the doubled b folds the binding back on itself so that it tightens and lasts. A rabb is one who stays close, keeping what is under his hand and raising it, not a distant figure looking on from above.
And it comes joined to al-ʿālamīn, the same word that closed the line two lines back, ﴿إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ﴾. Twice in three lines, and the second time as the last word of the sura. The reminder is for the worlds; the willing belongs to the Lord of the worlds.
That closes the ring. The door of benefit was opened with one word, and the sura is shut with the same word joined to the one who holds it. Those it was sent to are the very ones held by the one who sent it. No will is placed in a hand whose owner is not held.
The verb of the previous line returns, moved from past-and-about-them to present-and-to-them, and the plural subject is not taken away: the denial falls on the act's occurrence, not on whose act it is. Then the exception arrives with no stated term to except from, so the sentence will not close until willing is returned inside a willing, one verb with two subjects and no substitution between them. The name is from ʾ-l-h, an intent that ends at one; rabb from r-b-b is a holding that stays close and raises what it holds. The sura began with conditions that do not end until ﴿عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ﴾, a single self that knows what it brought, and it ends with a single willing inside which willing happens. The reminder is for the worlds, the willing is the Lord of the worlds', and the word is the same at both ends.
Et il vient joint à al-ʿālamīn, le mot même qui fermait la ligne deux versets plus haut, ﴿إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ﴾.
