﴾ It is nothing other than a reminding that pierces and holds (dhikr), for all the worlds that carry a mark (ʿālamīn). ﴿
In here negates, as mā does, and illā excepts after a negation whose excepted-from term is never stated. The build is a restriction: the whole kind is denied, and then one item is let out of it. The line does not simply say "it is a reminding"; it first shuts every other door.
And this is the fourth negation of the passage, and the first thing it affirms. Three came before it that denied and named nothing: not covered over, not clamping down, not the saying of a scatterer. Then a fourth negation arrives carrying an affirmation inside it. Three times what he is not; the fourth time, what it is.
The root dh-k-r is a sharp passage ending in a grip, and then the r keeps that grip running and lasting in time. A dhikr is a piercing that takes hold of a meaning and does not let it slip, not a passing over the surface of forgetfulness.
Set it beside the first thing denied in this passage, ﴿وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ﴾. That was the claim of a covering laid over a man; this is the name of a piercing that lands on the listener. They alleged a screen, and what he brought is described as the very thing that goes through screens. The claim is answered with its opposite, not merely denied.
And dhikr comes indefinite, after the restriction. An indefinite noun states a kind and confers no title: this is of that sort and of no other. The thing is narrowed to one name without being loaded with a name that could be fought over.
The root ʿ-l-m is a mark that comes up out of the depth and distinguishes what it is set on; hence ʿilm, a grasp fixed until it settles, and ʿālam, a domain carrying a mark that points to its maker. So the ʿālamīn are mark-bearers.
And see how the two ends of the line answer each other. What is named is narrowed to one, and then those it is aimed at are spread without limit. Illā tightens; the li- opens. That a piercing dhikr should be sent to mark-bearing worlds is a plain fitting of one to the other: what grips a meaning is sent to those who have a mark in them to be read. Nothing is worth piercing unless there is something behind it to take hold of.
The line is built as a restriction: the whole kind denied, one item let out. It is the fourth negation of the passage and the first to affirm anything, so after three sayings of what he is not comes one saying of what it is. What is affirmed is dhikr, a piercing that grips a meaning and keeps hold of it, standing directly against the covering alleged at the head of the passage. It arrives indefinite, a kind rather than a contested title. Then the li- opens onto the ʿālamīn, the bearers of the mark. The name is narrowed to one; those it is sent to are spread without an edge.
Placez-le à côté de la première chose niée dans ce passage, ﴿وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ﴾.
