Commentary
The root s-r-r carries two linked senses in Arabic: sirr, the thing kept hidden, and surūr, the gladness that settles in the chest. The pairing is not an accident of sound. Both name what moves in the chamber of the heart, screened from the eye. So "what they keep inward" is not the naming of an evil deed; it is the naming of a place. Whatever the self sets down in its chest without letting it reach the surface belongs there. The closed conference of the previous verse was not merely hidden from those who trust; it was lodged in the chest itself. At this root a secret is not a garment thrown over speech. It is the room inside where the speech is born.
The root ʿ-l-n turns on rising and coming into view, so to announce is, at the letter, to lift a thing onto a surface where it can be seen. What they bring outward, "whenever they meet those who trust, they say, We trust," is a lifting onto an audible surface and nothing more. The verse does not sort the honest announcer from the false one here. It sets the surface and the chest in one and the same place with respect to God's knowing: both are laid out before Him, and what is laid out for people is not a different kind of thing from what is laid out for Him.
The question "Or do they not know" is a denial in the shape of an asking, and it points at where their conduct comes from: a faulty picture of God Himself. In the previous verse God was pictured as a judge waiting on a case file that the holders of the text would submit. Here the picture is corrected. He does not receive the file; He knows the file before it is drafted. With that, the strategy of concealment falls at the root. If the point of sealing the text was to close the road of argument, then argument before God never needed a written page at all. The verse does not scold the earlier speech. It takes away its logic.
Another phrasing in this Book stands beside the present one: "He knows the secret, and what is more hidden still." The difference between the two is fine. There the sirr is set against something deeper than itself; here the sirr is set against the ʿalan. Taken together the images draw one steady scene: what a human eye takes for a surface is seen by God at full depth, and what a self takes for a guarded secret is seen by God as an open surface. The span that a wall of skin holds between the chest and the tongue is no division in God's knowing. It is a line of perception, and it belongs to the human alone.
What follows from this is practical. Any religious strategy leaning on concealment from God, or on narrowing what may pass through the door of knowledge, is built on an imprecise picture of Him. A self that installs a ritual difference between its chest and its speech, this portion for God and that portion for people, is behaving as though God read only the outer layer. The verse answers that the difference has no standing in being at all: what lies in the chest is the same material as what lies on the tongue, and both are known in a single instant.
The inward is a place and not a deed; the outward is a surface and not an intention; and the divine knowing holds no border between them. Whoever contrives by hiding, or adorns himself by announcing, contrives in front of the One who sees the chest and the surface with a single eye.
The verse is a correction in the order of being, aimed at the picture the previous verse exposed: a Lord seated as a judge awaiting the file the two parties will submit. "What they keep inward," from s-r-r, the root that gives both the secret and the gladness, names the chest room screened from the eye; "what they bring outward," from ʿ-l-n, names the lifting of a thing onto a visible surface. The verse sets the two on one footing before God's knowing, not because He pierces the skin to reach behind it, but because His knowing holds no layers to pierce. Secret and open are a divide of human perception and nothing further, which is why the concealment of the previous verse falls from its foundation: the Lord does not receive a file, He knows what the file carries before it is drafted. The word precedes the term: sirr is a place and not a furtive act, ʿalan is a surface and not a declared purpose, and before God the two rooms lie level under a gaze that is never screened.
Commentaire
Une autre formule du Livre se tient à côté de celle-ci : ﴿يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ وَأَخْفَى﴾.
Two Readings
Common reading
Commonly read as an ethical warning to the hypocrites: God sees what they conceal, so hiding will not help them.
A root-reading
Yusirrūn (S-R-R) = place inside a protected chamber of the chest. Yuʿlinūn (ʿ-L-N) = raise onto a visible surface. In this paired root-structure, secret and public are one material in two spaces. A reading that lifts the verse from moral threat to ontological correction: God is not an inspector combing through archives, God is the one for whom chest and surface are seen at once without distinction.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"Do they not know that God knows": a knowledge that bypasses a knowledge
The verse is built around a single root recurring three times: ʿ-l-m in "they know," then in "God knows," then in the verse that immediately follows: "and among them are illiterates who do not know the Book" (2:78). Knowledge circles through three positions: a knowledge forgotten, a knowledge that encompasses, and a knowledge that does not exist. The verse questions the logic exposed in the preceding one: those who conceal what they have, fearing it will be used against them on the Day of Standing, do they not know that the One they fear the believers will turn to as witness knows by Himself what they conceal?
The question, in its form, is a rhetorical denial; its meaning is that this knowledge is assumed to be already in their possession. What is absent from their reckoning is not the information but its presence in the moment of action. Knowledge of a principle is one thing, the activity of that knowledge in a decision is another. The Qur'an exposes a general psychological law here: agreed-upon knowledge may be wholly absent from the moment of conduct, so that the one possessing it acts as if he were ignorant, and were he asked, would confess. The knowledge is concealed between the self and itself.
The Qur'an uses this reprimand in other places. In Yūnus: "you are in no affair, nor do you recite of it any qurʾān, nor do you do any deed, but We are witnesses over you as you embark on it" (10:61). Witness is attached to the act itself; it is not deferred. In Ṭāhā: "He knows the secret and what is more hidden" (20:7). The secret is what is hidden in the self; the more hidden is what is hidden from the self itself. God's knowledge reaches a place the human does not reach in his own self-accounting.
"What they conceal and what they declare": the pairing of two spaces, cancelled from above
The preceding verse (2:76) constructed two spaces: the space of meeting believers and the space of seclusion among the concealers. Each space carried its own utterance. This verse comes to cancel that division from above: "He knows what they conceal and what they declare." The "and" in "and what they declare" gathers the two spaces into a single knowing, and what those who partitioned took as two becomes, before God, one position.
This law recurs across the Qur'an. In al-Raʿd: "alike among you is he who keeps his speech secret and he who declares it openly, and he who hides by night and he who walks by day" (13:10). Concealment and announcement are equal; night and day are equal. In al-Mulk: "and keep your speech secret or declare it openly: He is knowing of what is in the chests" (67:13). The outcome in all these is one: the discourse-doubling between secret and open loses its meaning before the One from whom no secret is veiled.
The rule: trickery by means of space depends on the existence of walls that separate, and these walls stand in the horizontal axis between people and collapse in the vertical axis between the servant and his Lord. Whoever builds his identity on these walls in the first axis has forgotten the second, and discovers, when the walls are lifted, that his two discourses were one speech listened to by one witness. In Qāf: "and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. As the two receivers receive on the right and on the left, sitting. He utters no word but with him is a watcher, ready" (50:16-18). What each space utters is connected to a witness whom no wall separates.
The verse's relation to what comes before and after: the unveiling of the logic of secrecy, the opening of the tragedy of the illiterates
The verse marks a hinge between two arcs. The arc before it (2:75-76) traced the elite that hears God's speech and then has its discourse split between outside and inside. The arc after it (2:78-79) will expose the consequence on the laity: a people who know the Book only as wishful expectations, receiving what is handed to them by the distorters. The verse between the two records in a single line that this whole intricate apparatus, secret and announcement, seclusion and meeting, concealment and distortion, is seen through from above.
At this point the need for an external trial of the distortion disappears. The one who conceals and distorts does not wait for the testimony of witnesses; testimony is set on him before he acts. The verse posits a heavy psychological image: the distorter behaves as though the King who walks his kingdom were absent from his assembly, while in fact He is sitting with him, watching. The Qur'an compresses the image in two words: "does He not know who created?" (67:14). The One who created the space is not concealed from any space.
The context turns, after this verse, to the very victims of the distortion. The elite this verse questions is the one that took over the laity named in the next verse "illiterates." The relation between the two locations is that of act and effect: an elite that hoards the text and tints it, and a laity that receives what is tinted as if it were the original. The verse between them affirms that this entire chain is wholly visible from outside it, recorded with precision that will be displayed at the place of reckoning.
