﴾ Do not think those who were killed in Allah's path dead. Rather, they are living with their Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), being provided for. ﴿
The prohibition comes heavily in "do not think," to cut off one estimate in particular. Reckoning, from ḥ-s-b, is an inward containment that enters a fine channel and then attaches to its result, so it denotes a judgment that gathers its premises and settles upon them. The heavy ending prevents the judgment that is about to appear from settling, and so readies the mind to move it from the death that was reckoned to the opposite that is established.
Those meant by the ruling are "those who were killed in Allah's path." Killing, from q-t-l, is a knot in the depth of a thing that is cut, so that what it clung to and held slips away from it, and it falls upon them without their killer being named, while "in Allah's path" preserves the road to which the killing was ascribed. "Dead," for its part, is the name whose placing upon them the prohibition refuses. So the verse keeps its description as it shaped it, "those who were killed in Allah's path," defining them by the act that fell upon them and by the road to which that act was ascribed.
"Rather" leaves the name of death behind and establishes its opposite: living. Life, from ḥ-y-y, is a pure passing through that extends and flows, and the doubled glide lengthens that flowing within the root. The phrase "with their Rabb" then joins this life to the quarter of the Rabb annexed to them, moving the estimate from a death that was reckoned to a life established in the nearness of lordship.
The living are paired with provision. The term is from r-z-q: a flowing that presses together in a narrow place and then knots as it reaches the one who receives. The present makes the receiving renewed, and its attachment to "with their Rabb" returns the provision to the quarter in which their life was established. So life, nearness and provision gather in one predicate that undoes the reckoning of death.
The emphatic address forbids the reckoning of those killed in Allah's path as dead. Their killer stays without a name, and the path stays described as the verse pronounced it. "Rather" then turns from that judgment to a direct establishing: living with their Rabb, being provided for. The life is established and the provision renewed, but the manner, the measure and the scene are not mentioned. No title, no ordered rank and no narrative is needed for it; the force of the verse lies in undoing death and establishing life and provision.
