﴾ He will speak to the people in the cradle and in full maturity, and he will be among those who repair. ﴿
In the verse before it was "a word from Him"; here the bearer of the name becomes the one who does the speaking with people. Speech, from k-l-m, is a bounded meaning that extends until it gathers into a unit reaching a hearer, and the tafʿīl form in "will speak" carries a sustained, repeated charge, so the speech does not come as a flash with no bond behind it.
The cradle, from m-h-d, is a gathering held within bounds where the breath comes out and settles: a place made ready for the beginning of a life. Full maturity, from k-h-l, is a passing from a state that was held in to a breath that extends and stands on its own in its ripeness. The conjunction joins the two edges: speech at the place of beginning and speech in the state where strength is complete.
Beyond naming the speech and its two times, the verse sets Jesus "among those who repair." Repair, from ṣ-l-ḥ, is a firmness that holds to its function and contains a life kept in balance, so that the thing comes back fit to stand. The active participle makes repairing a working nature that continues, and "among" ties him to a company that carries the same direction.
"In the cradle and in full maturity" carries one and the same capacity across two states that are not alike in strength or in independence. In the place of beginning, the speech runs ahead of what that state leads anyone to expect; in maturity it stands in the state of ripeness. Yet those addressed stay "the people" at both edges. The course therefore does more than display a capacity at an unaccustomed time: it stretches the bond of speech out to the one who receives it across time. The capacity appears early and keeps a channel of its own.
Then comes "and he will be among those who repair," which keeps speech from being the last measure of him. Speech may well reach the people, yet the verse attaches the one who speaks to a company whose nature is known by repair. The distinguishing act thereby enters a direction that is moral and practical at once: what matters, beyond a voice coming out in the cradle and in maturity, is that the one it belongs to stands inside a repairing that does not stop. The two times that hold the speech are themselves held by this belonging with which the description closes.
The announcement extends from the name to the act, to the time, and to the direction. The word announced becomes a speech that reaches the people; the text joins the cradle to full maturity, and then sets that extension inside the company of those who repair. What closes the description is the repair that carries the capacity, not the capacity by itself.
