﴾ Nothing is hidden from Allah, on earth or in heaven. ﴿
The verse opens with the emphatic inna, and then raises a negation that admits no exception: "nothing is hidden from Him." The verb stands in the form of continuing action, so concealment is denied in every state that renews itself, not at one appointed moment. The root kh-f-y carries a loosening that slips into a gap and then spreads inside it, like something withdrawing from the field of sight, and the verse cuts that movement short at the words "from Him": a thing may be hidden from an eye, and it is not hidden from Him.
The preposition sets the meaning as though laid within a field out of which nothing passes. Knowledge here is the denial that concealment takes place at all. It is not a search that reaches the concealed after some delay. A screen becomes a screen only for the one who stands outside it.
Shayʾ, "a thing," comes indefinite after the negation, so it takes in everything to which the name of a thing can apply; no large matter is left worthy of being known, and no small one left to drop out of the count. The root sh-y-ʾ carries a spreading that runs and is then cut off into one determined unit, so whatever has been made determinate, and has become a "thing," has entered the negation. When a negation reaches the smallest unit, no total is left outside it.
The verse distributes things across two fields: "on earth" and "in heaven." It then repeats both the negative and the preposition with the second field, so that the mention of heaven is a denial standing on its own like the first, not a quick tail attached to earth. The earth, from a-r-ḍ, is a floor where flowing meets weight, and heaven is the facing side within the wording. Between what is heavy and what stands above it, the sentence leaves no third hiding place.
Concealment tries to slip into a gap, and the negative comes and shuts the gap before it can open; smallness tries to fall out of the reckoning, and "a thing," left indefinite, comes and carries it. Earth and heaven stretch out as the two ends of the field, with the negative repeated between them. Knowledge here has no veil to draw aside, because the veil itself lies inside the field already known.
