﴾ Here you are, those who disputed about what you have knowledge of. Why, then, do you dispute about what you have no knowledge of? Allah knows, and you do not know. ﴿
The alerting particle opens a station of notice, followed by the pronoun of address, "you," and then the demonstrative, "these." The composition brings the addressees forward exactly as they are before the listener and readies them for what is about to be laid upon them. The joining of pronoun to demonstrative insists upon presence: you are these very ones, and it is your act that the speech falls upon. For this reason the verse moves from the call to the People of the Book into a confrontation that leaves the one addressed standing inside the question.
The sentence names a past verb first: "you disputed." Disputing, from ḥ-j-j, is a holding-in that narrows and then breaks out as an argument, and the repeated final letter doubles the gathering and sets it face to face with another argument; the reciprocal form runs the act between two parties. Yet the verse names a field first, "of which you have knowledge," and does not reject every dispute absolutely. The preposition of possession establishes that a connection is held by them, and the second preposition ties the knowledge to its subject. There the act had a limit to lean upon, and it was the field itself that gave the argument what carries it.
The connective then builds the second question upon the first acknowledgment. "Why" asks for what warrants the act, and the verb this time is in the present, displaying the dispute while it is still running. The earlier structure comes back, turned over by negation: "of which you have knowledge" becomes "of which you have no knowledge." In this symmetry neither the act changes nor the particle that relates it; what changes is the criterion alone, knowledge present or knowledge absent. So the place of the refusal is the argument's passing beyond the limit able to carry it, not the speech itself.
The conjunction steps out of the question into two sentences set against each other. Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is an emerging from depth that attaches to what is known, after which the final letter gathers it into a held mark. It occurs three times in the verse: twice as an indefinite noun, and once as a verb predicated of the name of Allah. Where the wording is "of which you have knowledge," the preposition of possession establishes their holding and the second ties the knowledge to what it attaches to, so a place is completed that carries the knowing. In the close, "He knows" stands absolute, with no relation to bound it, whereas "you do not know" is confined to the field they entered after a field in which the verse had affirmed knowledge for them. The contrast is between an emerging that needs no place to carry it and an emerging that stands only by its place.
The verse brings the addressees present by their own pronoun and their own demonstrative, then divides disputing by a single criterion: there is a field of which they have knowledge, and a field of which they have none. The symmetry discloses that the trouble lies in the argument's reaching out past what carries it, not in its form alone. The close then returns to that same pronoun and denies its knowing in that field, setting against it the knowing of Allah affirmed. So the reasoning that was called for just before begins with knowing the limit of what is known.
