﴾ Or he brings it back to mind, and the reminding reaches him and works in him. ﴿
It is aw and not wa. Had the joining wāw come, both would have been asked for together. Aw came, so each of them suffices on its own, and both stand under the laʿalla of the line before, which grants no occurrence.
The root dh-k-r is a penetration kept in the inward and then returned to the outward. Recalling, then, is not the getting of something new; it is the bringing of what was stored back to the place where it works.
Yadhdhakkaru was yatadhakkaru: its tāʾ was assimilated into the dhāl and the two became one doubled letter. It is the same assimilation as in yazzakkā just before: two successive verbs in the fifth form, each returning its act to the one who does it.
The fāʾ puts the verb in the subjunctive and makes it the answer to what precedes. The benefit is neither cut loose from the recalling nor set before it: first what was stored is brought out, and then it works.
The root n-f-ʿ is a penetration that runs in the place it enters until its trace shows there, so what benefits is what arrives and does not stop short of its site. There is no gift laid in a hand in this word; there is an effect that occurs inside.
And the doer of this verb is not the man. Al-dhikrā is what benefits, and he is the one benefited. He turns from doer in yadhdhakkaru to object in tanfaʿahu across a single word. He opens the door himself, and then what is not from him comes in.
It is aw, not the joining wāw, so the two possibilities are not required together, and both stand under laʿalla, so neither is asserted to happen. Yadhdhakkaru, from dh-k-r, is a penetration kept inward and then returned to the outward; it was yatadhakkaru with its tāʾ assimilated, as it was in yazzakkā before it, two fifth-form verbs each returning the act to its doer. Then a fāʾ makes the benefit a hanging answer and not a standing state, and tanfaʿahu, from n-f-ʿ, is a penetration that runs in its site until its trace shows there. Al-dhikrā is the noun of the act once it has occurred, and it comes as the doer while the man is the object: the position reverses in two words. He calls it up, and what he called up is what works in him.
