Commentary
The surah opens with idhā and not with the particle of doubt. The whole stance turns on that difference: this one hangs the sentence on a time that is coming, the other hangs it on a thing that may or may not happen. What is suspended here is an hour, not a possibility.
And then the answering clause does not arrive. The sentence is opened in this verse and stays open through the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth. Whoever waits for what follows a condition walks through five verses standing on one leg. The waiting itself has become part of the address, and a sentence that is not closed quickly keeps its listener on his feet.
Al-samāʾ is from s-m-w: a running that gathers and then rises. The word names the direction of height and its roof, everything that lifts above the head and casts its shade on what is under it. From the same root comes ism, a name: what is raised over the thing named so as to point to it. Height is in the letters before it is in anything you can see.
And the verse stops at the noun. It says "the sky" and moves on to the act that falls upon it: no shape, no limit, no description of any body. The word comes first, in the nominative, ahead of its verb: the roof is named, and only then what happened to it. The place is named before what befell it is said.
Sh-q-q is a fissure that falls in something solid and opens a passage through it without doing away with its two sides. From it comes shiqq, one of the two halves of what has been split, so that what is split stays two halves and not crumbs. A splitting opens a channel; it does not demolish a structure.
And inshaqqat is built on the form of yielding: an act taken on in the place rather than begun from it. The sky did not split itself, and no hand that split it is mentioned. The form says what happened and keeps silent about who brought it about, so the whole word stays on the side of the one that receives. Then the next verse names what was kept silent: "and it gave ear to its Lord." The splitting is a giving of leave in the body of the thing, and the giving of leave is a splitting in the hearing.
A condition opened and left open for five verses, a roof named and not described, and a verb built so that the sky is the one that yields rather than the one that acts. The doer is withheld here and named in the next verse. What is above every head is described by the one thing it does not own: that it should open.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «When the sky is split asunder».
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as reporting the terrors of the day of rising, and an elided answering clause is supplied for "when", completed in the inherited reading with something like "the human being met his deeds" or "then what happened, happened." The splitting is described as a rending of the celestial sphere and an opening of its gates, and set beside the cleaving and the folding-up in the neighbouring surahs. Rendered: "When the sky is split asunder."
A reading that supplies the answer and describes the shape before the verse mentions either.
A root-reading
Idhā hangs the sentence on a time that is coming, not on a matter still in doubt, and its answering clause is not given here, so it stays open for five verses. Al-samāʾ (s-m-w): a gathering that joins and rises, hence the direction of height and its roof, named and not given a shape. Inshaqqat (sh-q-q): a fissure that opens a passage in something solid and leaves its two sides standing, built on the form of yielding, so the sky is the one that receives rather than the one that begins, and no doer is mentioned until the following verse names Him. The verse becomes: "When the roof gives itself over to opening."
A reading that hears acceptance rather than initiative in the form, and in "when" a promised hour rather than a possibility.
The two readings do not conflict. The first supplies the answer and names the scene; the second reads the form and leaves the answer where the verse left it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
A verse of three words carries the whole surah. It hangs the speech on a time, and then leaves what is hung still hanging. The listener tied up in the first breath is not untied until he himself is called in the sixth.
And the order of what is mentioned begins from above. The roof first, then the ground under the foot, then the human being between them. What is said to the roof and to the ground is one sentence returning letter for letter, and what is said to the human being is a singular address that no one shares with him.
Then the act chosen for the sky is not an act of breaking. The root opens a passage and leaves the two sides standing, and the form makes the place the one that receives. What is described here is an opening and not an ending, which is exactly what the next verse takes up when it names the act a giving of ear.
Perhaps an instance of this may be sought in what is said today about the fate of the large structures of nature: that what looks fixed and settled is a balance resting on conditions, and that the lapse of the condition ends the fixity without any departure from its own order. It may be that this points to something: that what the verse describes is not the breach of a law but a law arriving at its end. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse mentioned only a time, a roof, and an opening, and settled nothing about the description of any body or the order in which anything occurs.
Tadabbur
