﴾ Or do you want to question your messenger the way Moses was questioned before? Whoever swaps trust for covering has drifted off the middle of the road. ﴿
S-ʾ-l, in the tongue, is a request that runs with a fixed precision to the one asked and then attaches to him. It is a neutral instrument: it may seek knowledge, and it may seek to corner. The verse pulls the two askings apart. The setting itself limits what is meant: the asking in view is an asking that keeps setting conditions afresh, not an asking after knowledge. The question is no fault in itself; the fault lies in its role. Once the question becomes a screen the asker sets between himself and his yielding to what has already come clear to him, it has turned from a search for knowledge into a stalling.
The disjunctive am carries the address out of the field of plain questioning and into the field of exposing an intent. The verse is not asking them for a piece of information; it is uncovering that what they are doing now is an inner wanting they do not own up to, the wanting to repeat the pattern of conditions set before. The verb "do you want" is chosen with care, since it moves the reckoning onto what is wanted rather than onto what is said. And once the wanting is uncovered, the excuse that the question was a search for knowledge falls away.
B-d-l turns on putting one thing in the place of another. "Swaps trust for covering" is a construction that sets the thing taken ahead of the thing given up, making the covering what is taken and the trust what is left behind. That inverts ordinary trading sense, since nobody in his right mind takes the lower and leaves the higher, so the construction lays bare a fault in the reckoning. And whoever puts cornering questions to the messenger is not seeking knowledge; he is putting covering in the place of trust, in a bargain that does not come out even.
K-f-r is a covering that veils what has stood firm, and ʾ-m-n is the granting of safe conduct to what has stood firm. So the pairing in the verse is not between a disobedience and an obedience but between two postures: one that grants the source its safe conduct and receives its clear signs as settled, and one that covers the clear signs already laid out and asks for others. The stalling asker is doing the work of covering: he veils what has come clear to him with a fresh question. In his hand the question is an instrument of covering, not an instrument of knowledge.
"The middle of the road" is the level of the straight way, not its edges. The wording is exact: it does not say he strayed from the road, it says he drifted off its middle, which is to say he went out of the road's evenness and not out of the road altogether. This staller is still on the outward face of the way, but he has leaned from its middle toward an edge, the edge of setting conditions, where he asks instead of complying. Guidance holds at the level, not at the edge, and whoever joins himself to an edge loses the description of levelness.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the question is a role that turns with the intent from a search for knowledge into a stalling; trust is the granting of safe conduct to the clear sign already laid out; and the drifting here is a shift off the middle of the road, not a going out of it.
The disjunctive am at the head of the verse moves the address out of questioning and into the uncovering of an intent: the verb "do you want" points to an inner wanting its owners do not own up to. What they want in truth is to repeat the pattern of conditions the verse names in "the way Moses was questioned before": an asking that sets conditions, not an asking after knowledge. The question in itself is no fault; the fault is in its role, once it becomes a screen between the asker and his yielding to what has come clear to him. Here the larger flaw shows in an exact construction: "swaps trust for covering," from k-f-r and ʾ-m-n, a construction that sets covering in the place of the thing taken and trust in the place of the thing left, so that he takes the veiling and lets go of the safe conduct. That is a trade announcing a fault in the reckoning and not in the understanding. Then the verse fixes where such an act ends, with a phrase that parts leaving the road from leaving its middle: "has drifted off the middle of the road," which is to say he shifted off the road's evenness and came to its edge; his outward face is still on the way, but his middle has moved. Guidance is in the levelness, not at the edge.
