﴾ You who have entrusted, ask help through patience and through connection. God is with those who hold steady. ﴿
The call is built out of three devices before it reaches its subject: yā, the particle of calling; ayy, a vague noun that waits to be completed; and hā, an alerting particle set behind it. Then comes a relative noun with a verbal clause hung on it, "those who have entrusted." The community is not called by a settled name, not "O Muslims" and not "O people of faith," but by a verbal clause in the perfect: those who performed the act of entrusting. The construction refuses to let faith harden into an inherited identity, and keeps it an act traceable to named agents. Every charge that follows lands on them by the description of what they did, not by the description of where they belong. If the act stops, the description falls, and the right to be called falls with it.
Istaʿāna is of the pattern istafʿala, and what it names is the seeking of help, not the help itself. The command did not say "worship by patience and connection," nor "be patient and pray," but "ask help through patience and through connection." This choice of pattern moves patience and connection out of the circle of ends and into the circle of instruments. Help toward what? The context answers. After the turning of the direction of prayer and the pressure of those who dispute it, and after the charge to remember and to give thanks at verse 152, the community stands where a continuous help is required. Patience and connection are the tools by which that help is obtained, not a substitute for it. Whoever keeps them up as an appearance without seeking help through them has used the tool for something other than what it was made for.
The bāʾ in "through patience" is the bāʾ of instrument, and ṣabr has already been grounded earlier in the surah as a hardness that juts out and runs on. What needs stressing here is that patience is an inward instrument with no outward expenditure: no rite bounded by an hour, no posture of the body that anyone could observe. It is the holding of the self back from going slack before whatever invites it to let go. And because it is inward, no one can witness it except the one who owns it. That is why the divine companionship at the close of the verse is coupled to it and to nothing else: patience alone stands in need of a witness outside the self.
The root of ṣalāh is ṣ-l-w: a force that fastens and extends, a firm bond that does not come apart. Unlike patience, which is pressed together on the inside, connection runs out through an outward place and then comes back. The one who prays turns toward the direction the preceding verses set in order, faces the side of the sacred place of prostration, stands, bows, goes down; and the trace returns to his heart. So the two instruments complete each other on a single axis: patience is a breath held in, connection is a breath let out and coming home. To lean on one without the other is a disorder. The man of patience alone grows hard and cramps; the man of connection alone takes shape and does not hold.
The verse named both instruments and then gave the companionship to those who hold steady alone. Why not "with those who hold steady and those who pray"? Because connection, in its root ṣ-l-w, already is a joining bond, so "God is with those who pray" would repeat what the act itself has built in: the one praying is by definition joined. Patience is otherwise. Its root ṣ-b-r is a running-on hardness that grips itself, with no joining bond to the source anywhere in it, so it is an act that can be carried on in isolation from the divine presence. The companionship came to it precisely, to fill what patience does not fill on its own. This companionship completes what is lacking; it does not praise what is already whole. Whoever holds steady is given the one thing patience does not own: the connection.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the call names by a clause of action and not by a label, the command aims at the seeking of help and not at the act alone, the bāʾ of instrument drops patience and connection to the rank of tools, and the companionship attaches exactly to the tool that carries no joining bond to the source inside its own root. The term ʿibāda stands upright only on that fine distinction between the end and the instrument, and between the inside and the outside.
The call "You who have entrusted" refuses to let faith become an inherited identity: the community is summoned by a clause of past action and not by a settled name, and if the act stops the description falls. The istafʿala pattern in "ask help" shows that both instruments are things one is helped by, not things aimed at: patience and connection are not the end but the means of asking for help, and the bāʾ in "through patience and through connection" is the bāʾ of instrument that drops them to the rank of tools. The root ṣ-b-r is a hardness that juts out and runs on inwardly, with no outward expenditure and no witness but its owner, while ṣ-l-w is a firm bond that travels out toward the side of the sacred place of prostration and then returns inside. The two complete each other on one axis, a breath held and a breath released and coming home. Then the close, "God is with those who hold steady," singles out the steady and not the praying, because connection is a bond in its own root and "God is with those who pray" would repeat what the act already builds, whereas patience can be practiced in isolation, so the companionship comes to fill what patience does not fill by itself.
