﴾ It is not for a prophet to misappropriate. Whoever misappropriates will come with what he misappropriated on the Day of Rising. Then every soul will be paid in full what it earned, and they will not be wronged. ﴿
The conjunction opens a denied ruling in the form "it is not for," and the preposition ties the entitlement to "a prophet," a noun that stands indefinite in a context of negation. The verbal noun "to misappropriate" is the thing lifted away from him. Misappropriation, from gh-l-l, denotes a depth that attaches to a place; the repetition of the lām then thickens the holding, so the word carries the taking of a thing and the keeping of it outside its course. By joining the indefinite "prophet" to an act stated in general, the verse lets the ruling run over the description and over the act wherever the two meet.
"Whoever" moves the ruling from a general negation to a condition open upon every actor. The verb of the condition and the verb of its answer are both in the jussive, so the tie between the act and its result tightens. The preposition in "with what he misappropriated" makes the withheld thing the companion of his coming, while the perfect in the relative clause establishes that the act took place. On the Day of Rising the actor thus comes with the very thing he took out of its course and held.
The adverb of time attaches to that coming and names the moment, "on the Day of Rising," without detailing any scene. "Then" places after it a verb in the passive: "will be paid in full." Payment in full, from w-f-y, is a knotting that runs through while connected and then extends to completeness, so it carries the delivery of a thing entire. The subject of that passive, "every soul," brings every single self into the ruling, so the first condition does not remain alone as the measure of this fulfillment that gathers them all.
The relative "what" is what every soul is paid in full, and its clause, "it earned," returns the measure to the act the soul acquired for itself. The feminine in the verb refers back to "soul," whereas the plural in "they" gathers the souls after "every" had distributed them one by one. This passage from the distributed singular to the plural preserves individuality in the earning and breadth in the denial of wrong. Wrong, from ẓ-l-m, is a covering that closes over a thing and takes hold of it, keeping it held within, so that it holds the right back from its owner. The passive joined to the negation shuts off any falling of wrong upon them, and the ruling stops at the limit of payment according to earning: a measure that reaches its owner entire, and a limit from which nothing is cut away.
The text denies that misappropriation belongs to a prophet, and the indefinite in "a prophet" attaches the ruling to the description wherever it is found. It then sets up a condition in which whoever misappropriates carries what he misappropriated at the moment of his coming, on the Day of Rising. After that particular case, the payment widens to every soul according to what it earned, equally and without exception. The passive keeps the delivery whole and the denial of wrong keeps it exact, so the withholding stays bound to the one who did it, he comes bearing it, and every soul receives in full what it acquired for itself.
