﴾ If Allah helps you, none can overcome you. If He forsakes you, who is there to help you after Him? Upon Allah let those who give trust rely. ﴿
"If" opens a condition whose verb is the imperfect "helps you." Help, from n-ṣ-r, denotes a hollow containment that enters a firm closing and then runs through piercing, so it carries an aid that gathers strength and releases it toward the one who receives it. The pronoun of the addressees is the object, and the name of Allah is the agent, stated explicitly and placed after it, so that in this sentence the help is not referred to their own management or their number. The imperfect opens the possibility that the aid renews itself, and the condition ties a cutting answer to it. The statement therefore rests on two terms only, the one who helps and the one helped, and what follows is suspended on the first alone.
The consequence particle joins the answer of the condition, and the negation that covers a whole kind enters upon "overcomer." Overcoming, from gh-l-b, is a depth that attaches and connects and then settles upon the one overcome, so it carries a mastery rising above another strength. "Overcomer" is an active participle carrying an active and continuing nature in overcoming, but the negation exhausts every possible bearer of it, and the lām in "for you" ties this absence of an overcomer to the addressees at the moment the condition is realized. The answer does not mean that they have become the source of the aid; its force remains suspended on Allah's help, stated at the head.
The conjunction adds an opposing condition, "if He forsakes you." Forsaking, from kh-dh-l, is a piercing that runs through while still connected and then attaches to the forsaken one while leaving the support behind, so it carries the cutting of a prop. Its answer is a question, "who is there to help you," in which the gathering of the interrogative, the demonstrative and the relative asks for an agent the text does not supply, and the verb of helping then returns in the imperfect. "After Him" refers the pronoun back to Allah and shuts every direction of aid once His forsaking has fallen. The question is itself the answer: the form "who is there" asks for the one who would do the act, so the place stays empty in the wording, and that emptiness is read from the structure of the question, not from any report added to it.
The conjunction opens the close and fronts "upon Allah" before the verb, which makes the direction of dependence the focus of the command. The consequence particle ties this result to the two conditions, and the lām of the imperative enters upon "rely." Reliance, from w-k-l, is a knotting that enters grip and then attaches to a direction, and the reflexive form brings the one who carries it deliberately into dependence. The agent, "those who give trust," is an active participle of ʾ-m-n, so it carries an active and continuing nature in the secured trust that root names. The fronting of "upon Allah" before the verb of command makes the sentence decisive about the direction to which dependence attaches, one single direction that the two conditions had already designated.
The verse builds two opposing conditions around a single agent. If Allah helps the addressees, no overcomer remains for them, the negation exhausting the very kind; if He forsakes them, the question comes and finds no helper after Him. The two sentences together uncover how overcoming depends upon aid: the overcomer's place empties when the help is present, and the helper's place empties when the forsaking falls. That is why the direction of dependence, "upon Allah," is fronted in the close, before those who give trust are commanded to rely, as an active and continuing nature attached to Him alone.
