﴾ Our Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), give us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Rising. Indeed, You do not fail the appointment. ﴿
The call "Our Rabb" is repeated once more, and the wāw coordinates a new verb of supplication: give us. Its subject is the pronoun of the One addressed, "us" is a first object, and the relative "what" is a second object defined by its clause, "You promised us". Promise, from w-ʿ-d, denotes an encompassing that shows from the depth and then holds fast under pressure; it carries a future word held to measure. The pronoun of address in the promising is the very giver being asked, and the pronoun of the speakers is the very one promised; the relative thus carries everything settled between the promise and the prayer within one relation.
"Through Your messengers" attaches to the promise or to what was promised, and makes the messengers the course along which it is carried in the phrase. "Messengers" is a plural annexed to the kāf of address, and the verse names none of them. Sending, from r-s-l, is an onward flow that enters a fine channel and then attaches to the side of arrival; it carries an extended dispatching. The annexation to the Rabb fixes their ascription to Him, while the plural opens the road of the promise through messengers whom the supplication ascribes to its own Rabb. With this, the giver, the sender, and the thing promised are gathered in one bearing.
The wāw coordinates the lā of supplication with the present: do not disgrace us. Disgrace, from kh-z-y, is a piercing in which a sharp, compressed flow gathers and whose effect then extends; it carries an abasement that reaches its bearer. The object pronoun gathers the supplicants themselves. "The Day of Rising" is in the accusative as an adverb, bounding the time of the request by the named day; rising, from q-w-m, is a knotting that holds in an inward containment and then stands up. What is asked, precisely, is the absence of disgrace from them on that day, and the adverb falls as a limit of time upon the request itself.
Inna resumes the address to the Rabb with emphasis, and lā negates the present "You fail". Failing, from kh-l-f, is a piercing that attaches and then opens a gap that carries the act away from what was appointed, and the ifʿāl form assigns the making of that gap to an agent of whom it is here denied. "The appointment" is a definite object drawn from the very material of the promise, and the close thus returns to "You promised us" without disclosing its content. The negation is a statement, not a request, and so it supports the supplication with an acknowledgement about the One addressed: fulfilment of the promise is asked because failing is denied of Him.
The supplication gathers two requests and an acknowledgement. They ask to be given what was promised them through messengers ascribed to the Rabb, so they make the promise travel along the very lordship they called upon; and they ask that disgrace not reach them on the Day of Rising, so they set the request within the time they themselves named. They close by affirming that the Rabb does not fail the appointment. The pronouns and the verbal material hold together: You promised us, give us, Your messengers, do not disgrace us, indeed You, the appointment. The hope therefore rests upon the promise ascribed to Him and upon the denial of failing from Him, and the request leans on the quality of the One asked before it leans on the measure of what is asked.
