﴾ As for those who covered, I will make them undergo a severe torment in the present world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers. ﴿
The connective links this verse to the judgment promised in the one before it, after which "as for" opens the first of the two divisions. This division is marked out by an act, "those who covered," not by a name of lineage nor by a community named from outside. Covering, from k-f-r, denotes a concealment that holds what is inside it, then separates it from appearing and keeps it at a distance, while the veiling runs on without halting. The verb is in the past tense, so the division rests on what actually issued from them. The word thus stays bound to its own material in the verse: those who performed the covering are the subject of the answer that the second connective opens.
The connective of the answer stands before "I will make them undergo" and joins the division to its result. Torment, from ʿ-dh-b, is an emergence from depth that penetrates sharply, then attaches to its place and holds fast to it. Building the verb on the intensive tafʿīl pattern makes the act fall in a measure that renews itself, rather than as a single blow that passes and is over. The verbal noun, "a severe torment," then fixes the act by its own name and leaves nothing of it vague. "Severe," from sh-d-d, is a confinement that gathers force under a steady pressure, with the repeated final letter doubling the grip. So the description discloses how tightly the intensity coheres within the torment already named, and raises no second torment beside the first.
The verse sets the bounds of the torment's field by naming "the present world and the Hereafter" and linking the two with a conjunction. "In" brings the judgment into both fields and makes each of them present in its full extent. The detail remains folded within the two names, and what comes forward instead is the comprehensive truth: an intensity that takes in the near field and the other one.
The conjunction joins the torment to the denial of help. Help, from n-ṣ-r, is a rising that breaks out from within and sets upright whatever needs a firm hold, then carries on as support toward the one it reaches. "Helpers" presents the bearers of that role as standing in it, but the negation denies that they have any, "any" takes in the whole class, and the plural closes every opening toward a helper. After the torment has covered both fields, a second totality follows and uproots the very direction of support.
The judgment comes out of the disagreement into a division defined by its act: those who covered. The connective of the answer binds that covering to a torment thickened by the intensive pattern, fixed by the verbal noun, and governed by the description of severity; "in" then carries it into the present world and the Hereafter with no detail brought in from outside. The close serves to deny the way out that might be imagined, not to add a torment: no helper rises with support. The structure consists of a division, a result, two fields, and a denial of help that leaves nothing over.
