﴾ When Allah said: Jesus, I am taking you in full, raising you to Me, purifying you from those who covered, and placing those who followed you above those who covered until the Day of Standing. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning what you differed in. ﴿
The speech begins by calling Jesus by name and with the emphatic "I," after which the acts are set in forms that carry their doer within them. In "taking you in full," w-f-y encompasses the place and penetrates it until the taking reaches its completion, so the wording remains gathered around the movement of full reception. "Raising you," from r-f-ʿ, denotes a flowing that opens an outlet and brings the movement up out of the depth. The two forms present the taking and the raising as acts that stand with their doer, and "to Me" names the direction of the raising.
The connective wāw joins the purifying to the taking and the raising, so that it comes as part of one saying. Purifying, from ṭ-h-r, is a broad closing-down that opens a cleared channel through which the breath runs, after which the trace of the cleansing extends. The doubled measure intensifies the movement until it appears as a renewed and working cleansing, while "from those who covered" traces the direction of the parting from a company identified by the act of covering. So the sentence fixes the side of the one purified and the side of what he is parted from.
"Placing," from j-ʿ-l, is a coming together that appears out of depth and then extends, attached to a new condition; that is, a setting that brings a position into being. The active participle carries the placing as a working and continuing nature. Its object is "those who followed you," and their position is "above those who covered." The verse sets the following against the covering, so that each side is defined by its own act: these followed, and those covered. "Until the Day of Standing" then sets a limit in time for this arrangement. The being-above is a position that reaches to the day the text has named, not a passing impression.
"Then" separates the extension toward the Day of Standing from what follows it, and places "to Me" before "your return." Return, from r-j-ʿ, is a flowing that meets a raised gathering and then emerges out of the depth, coming back to its beginning. The pronoun in "your return" is a plural that includes those addressed, among whom the following, the covering and the differing took place. Their positions were set apart, yet their point of return is not many: it is to Allah. With this the scene passes from an ordering that extends in time to a coming back that gathers the sides at the source of the judgment.
The fāʾ joins the returning to the judging, so the point of return is no assembling without a settlement of what was differed in. Judgment, ḥukm, from ḥ-k-m, is a narrowing that holds within and meets a withholding kept in check, then gathers and cleaves together into a firm decision. "Between you" makes the judging a line of separation in the relation among the sides, and "concerning what you differed in" makes its subject the difference that had been a space in which they dwelt. So the sentence fixes three bounds: the one who judges, the ones who return, and the field in which the separation falls.
The saying builds a course from Jesus to Allah, and then from all of them to Him: a taking in full, a raising whose direction is known, a purifying that parts, and a placing that extends the position of the following to the Day of Standing. After the positions have been set apart, the point of return gathers the sides at that same source so that the judgment may settle their difference, rather than to wipe it out.
