﴾ Then if they turn away, indeed Allah is Knowing of the corrupters. ﴿
Once the clarification is complete, the possibility of a stance is opened. The connective joins the verse to what came before it: the establishing of the true account, of oneness, of might and of wisdom. The condition begins after a clarification whose sentences were carried through, not in a void. "If" opens the possibility of the act and hangs an answer upon it, without ruling that the act must occur, and the structure thereby keeps the difference between what the previous verse settled by affirmation and what this verse offers as a possibility in the stance of those addressed. Truth does not become conditional on their response, and yet it is their response that is placed inside the conditional clause.
Turning away is a movement that changes the direction of the face. Turning, from w-l-y, denotes a knot that encloses a bond and then stretches on, fastened to a direction, while the final glide prolongs that movement in its running. The tafaʿʿul form brings the doer into the turning of his own bearing, so turning away becomes a departure from the very thing to which he was called. The verb is plural and in the past within the space of the condition, and so it weighs the visible choice: after the clarification, the side turns its bond around and walks out of its direction.
The answer does not hang upon their showing. The answer's connective brings a fresh affirmation, "indeed Allah," and refers the outcome of the condition to His knowing. Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is an emergence that rises out of the depth and fastens to the thing known, after which the final letter gathers it into a held mark. Here it stands as the predicate of Allah's name inside the answering clause, so the answer to the condition is a standing description, not a procedure waiting on their presence. The faʿīl build carries that emergence over from a state that happens into a description firmly set, one that their approach does not increase and their departure does not diminish. The act of those who turn away therefore stays kept in a held mark, even if their departure has ended their share in the address.
Knowing attaches to a working nature that continues. The verse closes with "Knowing" bound by its preposition to "the corrupters." Corruption, from f-s-d, is a split that opens a narrow channel through which order runs out, and that escape then settles under its pressure. The ifʿāl form makes the effect pass from the doer to what he corrupts, while the active participle presents those who corrupt as standing in that movement. Knowing is thereby attached to a description whose effect shows in the act.
The verse separates the firmness of the clarification from the possibility of a stance toward it. The truth already affirmed is untouched by "if"; what "if" opens is the possibility that those addressed turn away. Should they change their direction, the answer moves on to Allah's firmly set knowing, not to pursuing them with some new detail. The preposition then joins that knowing to the corrupters, described as bearers of a working nature that carries its effect out of themselves and onto others. In this way the condition closes the door of disputing without closing the scale of knowledge.
