Commentary
The address begins with the command "say," and then calls those addressed by the description the text itself lays down: "People of the Book." The call binds them to the Book they carry, so that what follows falls upon the people of that bond. Word, from k-l-m, denotes a holding that extends attached to its place and then gathers into a unit that comes out as expression; "even," from s-w-y, is a fine course knotted within an encompassing bond and then extended without leaning toward either side. The call therefore asks that both come to a word whose place stands even, "between us and you," not that one side dissolve into the other.
"That" opens the content of the even word, so its description does not stay general. The first thing in that content is a negation with an exception: "that we serve none but Allah." Service, from ʿ-b-d, is an emergence that rises from depth and attaches to the one it has risen toward, then becomes fixed under a discipline that does not leave it; it is therefore a service with a direction, not a motion without a facing point. The verb is in the first person plural, so the speaker enters under the rule himself and does not lay it upon the one addressed alone. The exception cuts off the spreading of service across several directions and confines it to Allah, whose name recurs within the verse.
The conjunction joins the second negation without making it a replacement for the first. Association, from sh-r-k, is a confinement that runs penetrating and then enters a held concealment, that is, bringing a partner into a space whose direction ought to stand on its own. The particle in "with Him" joins the act to Allah, while "nothing" is an indefinite under negation, and so it blocks the exception of anything small or great; its generality is wider than any list.
The third negation moves on from "we serve" and "we associate" to what some people make of others. Taking, from ʾ-kh-dh, is a prepared cut that penetrates and pierces its place, then brings what was taken out into a new bond. Lordship, from r-b-b, is a flow of care that attaches and holds fast, the repeated letter then doubling that bond. Yet the plural, "lords," is here denied at the very point where some take it from others among themselves, "apart from Allah."
If they turn away, the answer comes as a command to the group: "say." Witnessing, from sh-h-d, carries the frozen nucleus "a diffusion that fades in a void," and with the final letter what is present becomes fixed under pressure and settling. What is asked is that they witness that the speakers are "surrendered." Surrender, from s-l-m, is a flow in a fine course that attaches to its place, which the final letter then gathers into a soundness with no breach in it. "Surrendered" is an active participle that keeps this condition standing in those who hold it at the very moment witness to it is asked, so what is sought is testimony to a present fact, not a promise about what is to come. The turning away does not cancel the even word, and it turns the close into a declaration of the condition and a request for witness to it.
The verse sets out an even word and then fills it with three denials: a service that turns to none but Allah, an association into which nothing at all enters, and a human relation that does not raise some people as lords over others apart from Him. Through the plural pronoun the speaker stays inside every rule. So if the turning away comes, the saying holds firm upon the condition it has named: a continuing surrender that the other party is asked to witness.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as inviting the People of the Book to a shared word: serving Allah alone, denying association, and refusing that people take one another as lords apart from Allah.
A reading presenting the even word and its content.
A root-reading
The word (root k-l-m) stands even (root s-w-y) between both sides, confines service (root ʿ-b-d) to Allah, negates association (root sh-r-k) and human lordship (root r-b-b), then fixes surrender (root s-l-m) through witness.
A reading following the inner balance of the three negations.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the invitation; the second discloses its structural balance. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Kalima, from k l m, is a holding that keeps what is within, then attaches to its place and extends, until the final letter gathers it into one unit that emerges as speech: a word is a meaning that was held back and became carried in a single utterance passed between two parties. Sawāʾ, from s w y, is a fine narrowing bound within an encompassing knot and then extended in a course that leans to neither side: it describes a place standing in a middle that neither party owns. ʿIbāda, from ʿ b d, is an emergence from depth that attaches to the one it has risen toward and then becomes fixed under a discipline that does not leave it: a service with a single direction, not a motion without a facing point. Shirk, from sh r k, is a narrowing that runs through and then enters a retaining closure: bringing a second party into a field whose direction should have stayed its own. Rabb, from r b b, is a flow of care that connects and holds, its repeated letter doubling that bond: lordship is continuous supply, not a title of honour. And islām, from s l m, is a flow in a fine course that attaches to its place before the final letter gathers it into a soundness with no breach in it. The letters thus draw the whole sentence: a meaning carried in an utterance, a place that does not lean, a direction that is not divided, and a bond of care that is not transferred to a human being.
Second: the scene
The command begins with "say," so the speaker is one who conveys and not one who sets the terms. Those addressed are then called by the description that ties them to the Book: "People of the Book." Then comes "come," a request to draw near to a place described before it is filled: "an even word between us and you." The phrase names both parties together, so the place is not the house of either one. That place is then filled with three refusals: that we serve none but Allah, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take another as lord apart from Allah. The name of Allah recurs twice inside the content of the word, and the pronoun in "with Him" returns to it a third time, so the centre of the place stays one even though two parties stand upon it. The first refusal fixes the direction, the second closes the gap of the lesser partner, and the third carries that same fixing across to what stands between those present themselves. All three verbs stand in the first person plural, so the one inviting is inside every limit he proposes. The third descends from the vertical to the horizontal level, "some of us, others," making the wording reciprocal rather than aimed at one side in particular. Then comes the last possibility: "if they turn away." The answer is neither insistence nor threat, but a saying the other party is asked to witness: "bear witness that we are surrendered." The invitation stays on offer, the condition stays declared, and its witness is the very addressee who turned away.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs whenever two parties meet, each holding a body of text it takes pride in. Whoever calls for a meeting and then holds it in his own house has made drawing near into surrender, while whoever describes the place as "even between us and you" has stripped himself of the advantage of ground before he speaks. A second rule in the structure is that the one inviting enters first: every limit comes in the form of "we," so nothing is asked of the other that exempts the one asking. A third is that the gravest thing to strike a meeting of two parties is not difference of direction alone, but the rise of a human patronage inside the meeting itself, when some of those present become a source of supply for others and so own their decisions. That is why its refusal is made part of the shared ground rather than a branch deferred until after agreement. And a fourth pattern appears at the close: whoever has his invitation declined is still left able to declare his position and ask for witness to it, so refusal does not turn into severance and insistence does not turn into coercion. The saying stands, and its witness is the one who did not accept it.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The description of "an even word between us and you" may parallel what researchers in negotiation and social psychology study under the name common ground: a frame agreed upon before entering the disagreement, against which claims are measured and which neither party to the conversation owns, its absence turning dialogue into a contest over who sets the rules. What arrests the reader here is that the verse fills that ground with three refusals rather than with a shared positive creed, a choice noticed in the same field: agreement on what will not be done is easier to carry than agreement on what will be said. This is a possible parallel in describing the structure of the meeting, not a claim that the verse settles a rule in the craft of negotiation.
The third refusal, "that none of us take another as lord," may also meet what anthropologists and students of group behaviour study under the name status hierarchy: a recurring tendency in groups to build ranks in which decision settles with a few, and it is observed among them that such ranks form quickly even in groups that announce equality as their principle. What arrests the reader in the verse is that it does not stop at ordering the vertical relation between a person and his Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer); it makes the ordering of the horizontal relation between people a condition inside the word itself. The root r b b helps in reading that arrangement: lordship is a continuous supply of care, and whoever owns the supply owns the decision of the one who needs it.
And the close, "bear witness that we are surrendered," may touch what is called, in the study of relations between groups, the declaration of identity before the one who differs: that the disagreement stay known in its boundaries by the testimony of the other party itself, rather than sliding into a vagueness that feeds suspicion on both sides. It is worth noting that what is witnessed here is a condition standing in those who hold it, not a promise about what is to come; the root s l m carries that condition gathered and sound with no breach in it. All of this is a possible parallel in describing what passes between two parties, and it does not say that the verse settles a theory of society or of address.
