﴾ And he found within himself a touch of fear, Moses did. ﴿
A connective that follows immediately: the casting happened and this happened, with nothing between them. The root w-j-s is a joining shut inside the hollow and then working its way out through the folds until it is felt. The wajs is the faint sound that falls inside a person, and to strain the ear for what can barely be heard belongs to the same material. So the root describes no loud noise and no visible motion. It describes something fine that happens in the interior and that only its owner registers. The causative form here means: he found this in himself.
And the verb was not left alone; the place is stated. The preposition is one of containment, and what contains is "his self." N-f-s is a hollow in which something runs, going out and coming back, which is why the same material gives the breath and gives the dawn that breathes. The self, in the root, is an inside through which the unseen passes to and fro. So the verse fixes the location in order to say that nothing came out. No sound, no motion, no word. The interior is described and the exterior is passed over in silence, because there was nothing there to describe.
Nor is the word for fear the general one. It is the form of a single instance and a single state, a shape of fear rather than the kind of it, and it arrives indefinite and unqualified: not severe, not slight. That it happened is stated; how much of it there was is not. Kh-w-f is an emptiness that surrounds and then cuts its way into the hollow, so fear in this material is a void that penetrates rather than a weight that is laid on, and what enters the hollow as a void does not show in the face.
Then the name, and it comes last. Four words pass before it is said who this is: the verb, then the place of the verb, then what fell there, and only then the one it fell in. The ear receives the whole event before it learns whose event it was: something faint happened inside a human being and he found it. Only at the end of the verse is that hollow assigned to a person. The order puts the state first and the name after, so that what is described is described before it is attributed, a complete human condition that is then recognized as belonging to someone. And what passed in the hollow was told to nobody. The next verse answers it.
A verb of what is barely felt, a place that seals it inside, a single unmeasured instance of fear, and only then a name. The sentence finishes the state before it says whose it is.
