﴾ We said: Do not fear. You, you are the one that is highest. ﴿
No sound came out of the previous verse. The thing happened in the hollow, was described inside it, and was left there. Then speech arrives here with no question before it. Nothing was asked for: the verse does not say that he called out or complained. His inward finding was reported, and then the answer came to it. And the verb arrives in the first person plural, after the neighbouring verses had been narration and quoted speech. The setting turns from reporting words to uttering them.
What is uttered is a prohibition, not a statement. It is not "there is no fear upon you"; the act itself is forbidden. Kh-w-f is an emptiness that surrounds and then cuts its way into the hollow, so the prohibition falls on what enters, not on what shows. And these two words have already stood in this surah once, at the moment of an order to take hold: "Take it and do not fear." There they were said as a hand was told to close on something; here they are said as other hands are casting. One wording in two settings, and nothing beyond that is added.
Then three fastenings on one meaning. An emphatic particle; then a pronoun the sentence does not need for its completion, which narrows the predicate onto the one addressed; then the definite article on the word for height, so that it is not "a higher one" but "the highest." What is tied three times is not said to someone who already holds it, but to someone into whose interior its opposite has entered. And the verb is not future: not "you will rise," not "you will overcome," but what is the case now, before he casts anything and before anything happens in the assembly. The description precedes the event; it is not its fruit.
Four verses earlier in this same scene the saying was that whoever sought to stand above had prospered today. The root is the same, and the form there was the tenth, the form of seeking and taking on: a height to be pursued, for which devices are settled and ranks are dressed. Here the form is the comparative made definite. There is no seeking in it and no exertion. It is laid on a man who never mentioned height in anything he said, and who one verse ago was finding a touch of fear inside himself. So the one who sought height and prepared for it did not reach it, and the one told that he is the highest never asked for it. The distance between the two forms is the distance between a hand reaching for a thing and a description coming down on a man.
An answer to something never spoken aloud, tied three times, and delivered before anything has happened. The word for height had been claimed in this scene by the one who wanted it; it is given here to the one who did not.
﴾ Nous dîmes : Ne crains pas. Toi, c'est toi le plus haut. ﴿
