﴾ And they are not, away from it, ones who withdraw into a covered interior (ghāʾibīn). ﴿
In this passage every affirmation carries two emphases: "and over you, most surely, keepers"; "truly those of the expanse are, most surely, inside"; "and truly those who split are, most surely, inside." Here the negation arrives on the same pattern: mā negates, and then a b enters upon the predicate and draws the negation tight a second time.
So the surah does not affirm twice and deny once. What was built with two affirmations is shut with two negations.
And the sentence is nominal, like the sentence of the keepers. There is no verb in it to begin and to end, so what is denied is not an event that might happen once and not another time. What is denied is a quality of them in their condition.
ʿAn is the particle of passing beyond. Whatever comes with it is understood to have been left behind the back of the one who passed. It is the only word here that carries the smell of a way out.
And then what follows it is denied. The particle stays in the sentence and its meaning does not: the passing beyond is heard and is then said not to have happened. That is heavier than closing the sentence with no mention of a way out at all.
The h in "away from it" reaches back to what stood in the verse before. So what is denied is an absence from one particular thing, not an absence in general.
The root gh-y-b is a sinking that covers without cutting, extends in hiddenness, and then opens onto the possibility of coming out. So the absent one is not the non-existent. The absent one is something that exists and has an interior to withdraw into.
Denying absence is therefore not merely affirming presence. It is taking away the interior that one withdraws into. What was denied them is the place in which they used to keep themselves out of sight.
And with this, what began in the previous noun is completed. Fujūr, in its letters, is the splitting of a barrier that lets out what had been held in the interior. Whoever has let out what was in his interior has no interior left to disappear into. The two roots meet at the same place: one splits it open, and the other is denied of it.
The negation runs on the pattern of the affirmations in this passage: mā, then a b upon the predicate, two negations set against the two emphases of the verses before, and a nominal sentence denying a quality rather than an event. Then the particle of passing beyond is spoken, the only word in the sentence carrying the smell of a way out, and what follows it is denied. The root gh-y-b is a sinking that covers without cutting, extends in hiddenness, and opens onto the possibility of coming out, so the absent one exists and has an interior to withdraw into. Denying the absence takes that interior away. And the root meets what came before it: fujūr is the splitting of a barrier that lets out what was held in the interior. Whoever has emptied his interior has none left to disappear into.
